Preview: Yankees at Rays (9/15/14)

Chris Capuano (1-2, 5.13 ERA) opens the series against Alex Colome (1-0, 3.79 ERA) and the Rays. Capuano faced the Rays on Wednesday night at home taking a no decision after allowing four earned runs in just one third of an inning. He will be facing the Rays for the fourth time this season and has never beat them in his career. He has not allowed a stolen base in 79 innings pitched this season. The last stolen base against him was on August 25th, 2013 when he was with the Dodgers. The player that stole on him was now teammate Jacoby Ellsbury.

Colome has made two appearances, one start for the Rays this season and is 2-1 with a 2.45 ERA in five career Major League appearances for them, four being starts. He went 7-6 with a 3.77 ERA in Triple-A this season. “The slider’s outstanding, and the changeup is coming along,” Joe Maddon said. “He’s got some goods in the bag. For me, it’s probably more about consistency with command. Knowing where your fastball is going is the primary thing. Once he knows where his fastball is going, the other stuff really plays heavy, so that’s what it’s about. He’s young, and he’s had a couple of setbacks, but obviously he can be really good. We’ve seen it.” While in Triple-A, he served a 50 game suspension without pay for violating MLB’s Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program.

The Rays are looking for their third consecutive 10 win season against the Yankees. They are 9-7 so far this season which means one win will make them the first team since the 1973-75 Red Sox to win 10 or more games in three straight seasons against New York.

Notes on the game

The Rays will honor Derek Jeter in a pregame ceremony Tuesday. He is just the third visiting player to be honored at the Trop. The other two were Mariano Rivera and Cal Ripken Jr.

Brian McCann has just 4 homers on the road this season.
