Preview: Yankees at Tigers (8/27/14)

Greene-300x188

After dropping game one of an important series, Shane Greene (3-1, 3.17 ERA) is on the hill against David Price (1-1, 2.35 ERA). Jose Abreu took Greene deep in the first inning for a three run homer in his last start. He shook it off and limited the damage throwing five innings. “It’s one of those nights where he wasn’t real sharp,” Joe Girardi said. “But he kept it to three runs and he gave us a chance to win.” He faced the Tigers on August 7th and threw eight shutout innings.

In his last start, Price took a 1-0 loss against his former team. He allowed just one hit and retired the last 23 hitters he faced. “You can always build,” Price said. “You can always get better. I definitely threw well my last start at Tampa, but I can definitely get better.” He has made four starts against the Yanks this season, but only one with the Tigers, a no decision on August 5th.

Brett Gardner hit in the cages for the second day in a row Tuesday. He was going to run the bases but rain forced the team to do use the underground cages. “Gardy’s pretty tough and Gardy’s played through a lot, which made me believe that it’s probably not 100 percent, which it might not be for a while,” Girardi said. “This extra day will probably do us some good. My concern is that he favors it or that he gets out there and he can’t run, and then I’ve got to make a change. It can just really mess things up.”
