Preview: Yankees vs Orioles (9/23/14)

Brandon McCarthy (7-4, 2.54 ERA) has expressed interest in returning to New York next season, and why not, he has been quite successful since coming over from Arizona. But since he isn’t under contract after this year, this could possibly be his last start in the Bronx. He will take on Ubaldo Jimenez (5-9, 4.90 ERA) in the second of four against Baltimore. McCarthy’s last start against the Rays was his second in a row going seven innings. He picked up his tenth win of the year, seventh with the Yanks, allowing just two runs on four hits bringing his ERA for the year down to 3.93.

Jimenez went five innings his last time out allowing two hits on two runs against the Blue Jays, he got the win and the Orioles clinched the division. This will be his second start since being removed from the rotation. “He’s coming off a pretty good start and it fits into our maneuverability for the next seven games to be able to find out what we need to find out and make sure everybody’s getting the proper rest,” said Buck Showalter.

Mark Teixeira got a cortisone injection in his right wrist on Monday, the third one this season. He said the soreness and inflammation were in a different location than the first two injections. Tests showed the structure of his surgically repaired wrist is fine, but the discomfort required more treatment. “Weekend golfers can get away with it the year after surgery, playing now and then and taking some time off. I can’t,” Teixeira said. “I’m trying to play every game I can. This last week of the season, I will do whatever I can to stay out there and play every game.”
