Preview: Yankees vs Royals (7/9/13)

The fourth place Yankees turn to CC Sabathia (9-6, 4.06 ERA) and try to redeem themselves after an embarrassing loss scoring just one run. The Royals will counter with James Shields (3-6, 3.23 ERA). In his last outing, Sabathia picked up his 200th career victory holding the Twins to two runs over seven innings while striking out nine and throwing a season high 121 pitches. He will be facing Kansas City for the first time this year.

“He’s been huge,” Joe Girardi said. “You think about all the wins that he’s had, and I’m glad to get that out of the way for him. I don’t like milestones. Players are going to think about it, and people are going to ask him about it. For CC, I think it’s great. He’s been huge for this organization.”

Shields is in a three game downturn. Despite one win and two no decisions, he has a 6.48 ERA in that span and worked for only six innings in two of those starts. His ERA went above 3.00 for the first time in more than two months. In his last start against the Indians he struggled through a 34 pitch first inning.

Notes on the game.

Derek Jeter continued his rehab assignment with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Monday with a start at shortstop, reaching base twice and scoring a run.

The Yankees have gone 14-4 against the AL Central this season.

Game kicks off at 7:05 PM (EST) on Yes.
