Spring Training Game 3: Yankees lose to Orioles

New York Yankees 1 — Baltimore Orioles 5

Brett Gardner found success in today’s 5-1 loss to the Baltimore Orioles.

The only (likely) guaranteed starter for the Yankees Opening Day that came with the team today is Brett Gardner and it showed in the offense. Brett Gardner went 3 for 3 with 2 infield hits including a bunt single and ill-advised slide into first base just a day after losing Curtis Granderson to an injury. Jayson Nix also got 2 hits as he attempts to make the roster as a backup utility player. Minor league shortstop Walter Ibarra brought in the only run of the day after third baseman Corban Joseph gets a single and steals second in the 9th inning.

All of the pitchers brought to play Baltimore are minor league pitchers and none of them are expected to make the major league roster by the start of the season. Pitcher Vidal Nuno started today’s game and pitched 2 innings. He gave up 1 run on a pair of doubles in the 1st inning but he struck out 5, with all called strikeouts. Pitcher Corey Black overthrew with 2 walks that hurt his cause as he would give up 2 runs in his inning of work. Ryan Pope would also give up a run in his inning of work.

Win – Brian Matusz

Loss – Vidal Nuno
