Spring Training Game 30: Ryan injured in loss

Tampa Bay Rays 3 — New York Yankees 0

Chase Whitley started today as he continues to make positive impressions with spring training coming to an end.

After a scoreless first inning against the visiting Tampa Bay Rays, Desmond Jennings started the top of the second inning with a double to center field. James Loney would continue to have the Yankees€ number, hitting a run-scoring single. In the bottom half of the inning, the Yankees€ first two batters would get on with a pair of walks but a double play by Stephen Drew would slow down the momentum. A third walk would occur in the inning but the Yankees would be held off the scoreboard.

In four innings, Chase Whitley allowed one run on four hits while striking out six.

After a scoreless fifth inning by Esmil Rogers, the sixth inning would not go as well. After getting one out and giving up a single, Chasen Shreve would come in, still in the running for a spot in the bullpen. James Loney would strike again, hitting a ground-rule double down the left field line. After the second out, Kevin Kiermaier would hit a high chopper just beyond second base. Brendan Ryan would attempt to make a play but would not be able to come up with the play. The error on Brendan Ryan would prove more costly than just runs on the board as the defensive-minded shortstop would be forced to exit the game with an injury.

The Yankees would be limited to just four hits and four walks in today’€™s shutout loss.
