Tanaka struggles as Marlins dominate Yankees, 9-1

NEW YORK — A day after the team seemed to have turn a corner, the New York Yankees were dominated by the Miami Marlins, 9-1, at Yankee Stadium. Masahiro Tanaka‘s struggles continued, while the New York offense was unable to muster up any big hits.

Miguel Andujar’s home run in the ninth inning was the only run that crossed the plate for the Bombers.

From the get-go, the Yankees looked like they were in for a big offensive night against Jarlin Garcia. Brett Gardner and Aaron Judge walked to start the game, but Giancarlo Stanton hit into a double play to kill the rally.

For the Marlins, they actually did get off to a good start as they plated three runs in the first. Starlin Castro hit an RBI single to open the scoring, while J.T. Realmuto, who was just activated from the DL, plated two more runs as he made it to first safely on an error by Didi Gregorius.

While Tanaka looked to have settled in midway through the game, Realmuto made damage once again in the fifth inning, sending a three-run shot to deep in right field to give the Marlins a 7-0 lead. The Japanese starter would end the night with a horrible line of eight hits, seven runs, and two walks.

Though it wouldn’t look like it from the score, the Yankees had multiple chances to get back into the game. The team just could not cash in.

In the sixth, while Stanton struckout to begin, Gregorius, Gary Sanchez, and Aaron Hicks would work to load the bases. Neil Walker and Tyler Austin would subsequently strikeout to end the frame with no Yankee runs.

The inning before, Andujar would lace a one out double, but Gardner would be called out on strikes, before Judge would lineout to center.

In the game, Judge’s 12-game hitting streak also came to an end as he was 0-2, with two walks. Stanton once again received a great amount of boos from the Yankee fans in attendance as he continued to look lost at the plate, going hitless in four at-bats, striking out twice.

The Yankees have the day off tomorrow, but the home stand will continue on Thursday as CC Sabathia is expected to be activated off the DL to face Aaron Sanchez and the Toronto Blue Jays.

Current Yankees Record: 8-8
