Yankees @ Brewers (5/11/14)

David Phelps

David Phelps (0-0, 3.18 ERA) hopes he can give his mom his first win of the season as a mothers day present. Opposite him will be Matt Garza (2-3, 4.93 ERA) in the rubber match against the Brewers. Phelps is making his second start of the season after injuries to Ivan Nova and Michael Pineda took him from the pen to the starting rotation. He held the Angels to just one run on three hits in 5 1/3 innings of work on May 5, taking a no decision. Joe Girardi is expecting to get 90-95 pitches out of him this time out.

After a loss to the Cardinals to close out April, Garza expressed great frustration, but began May with a win. He allowed eight hits, but limited the damage to three runs and has won consecutive home starts.

Before the game, the Brewers will honor Derek Jeter and present him with a gift. Jeter has received parting gifts in Houston and Anaheim so far. The Astros gave the Captain golf clubs, a Stetson hat and boots, and the Angels gave him a 12 foot paddleboard. “He’s going to be missed,” Joe Torre said. “I think it’s great that he’s retiring, where he can finally admire what he has accomplished. If there was ever a role model, what he represents is something that doesn’t come along very often.”

Jeter has said that the pregame ceremonies have not affected his preparation. He has also been touched by the warm ovations, including during the first two games of the series in Milwaukee. “The way the fans have treated me, it’s been pretty special,” Jeter said. “Those are the things that I’ll remember, but it’s still early in the season so I try not to focus on that.”

Notes on the game

Dellin Betances has retired 10 of the 13 first batters he has faced. Of his last 22 outs, 16 have been strikeouts.

Alfonso Soriano has 999 career hits in the AL and 1,077 in the NL. With one more hit, he would become the seventh player all time with at least 1,000 hits in either league. The others are: Frank Robinson, Dave Winfield, Vladimir Guerrero, Fred McGriff, Orlando Cabrera and Carlos Lee.

Soriano also needs one hit to become the first player to record 1,000 hits, 500 runs, 500 RBIs, 100 home runs and 100 stolen bases in each league.
