Yankees Exhibition: Ellsbury homers in final tuneup game

New York Yankees 1 – Miami Marlins 2

The Yankees finished off spring training with their second exhibition game at the Miami Marlins.

Against Dustin McGowan, Jacoby Ellsbury provided the Yankees with instant offense. On a line drive over the right field wall, the Yankees took a one-run lead on the leadoff home run from the Yankees center fielder.

In his last tuneup start before they start counting, Luis Severino took the mound for the Yankees. Severino came out of the gate slow when Dee Gordon hit a single and Marcell Ozuna walked. After a ground out put two into scoring position, Giancarlo Stanton tied the game at one with a deep sacrifice fly that the Yankees were lucky it stayed to just one run.

After a throwing error by Didi Gregorius and a deep fly out, Giancarlo Stanton came up to break the tie in the third inning. Luis Severino gave up a single to the Marlins right fielder, plating the go-ahead run.

Overall, Luis Severino went five innings. He allowed two runs, one earned, on three hits with a walk. He struck out six and got ready to go to Opening Day.

Ultimately, the Yankees fell to the Marlins but the bullpen featured remarkable work by arms we will see at Opening Day. After a scoreless inning by Aroldis Chapman, despite hitting a batter and walking two, Andrew Miller made his first appearance on the mound since suffering his right wrist injury. He faced three batters, striking one and walking one. Relievers Kirby Yates and Johnny Barbato made great final impressions, each adding 2/3 of an inning of work, with both striking out one batter in today’s game.

Next game counts! On to Opening Day!

Win – Chris Narveson

Loss – Luis Severino
