Yankees Game 100: All-around offense backs up Sabathia in victory

New York Yankees 6 – Houston Astros 3

Riding a three-game winning streak, the Yankees turned to CC Sabathia to keep tallying the team wins.

After a scoreless first inning against Doug Fister, CC Sabathia looked to match but Marwin Gonzalez put the Yankees in an early deficit. Gonzalez took Sabathia deep to left field for a solo home run.

Brian McCann and Mark Teixeira started the second inning with a single and double. With two in scoring position, Didi Gregorius hit a fly ball deep enough to left to bring home McCann and tie the game. Starlin Castro got on with a single and Chase Headley brought home Teixeira to put the Yankees ahead. In the third inning, Starlin Castro reaches on an infield single with Carlos Beltran scoring from third to put the Yankees ahead by two.

While CC Sabathia held the Astros down after the home run from Gonzalez in the first inning, the Yankees really broke through against Fister in the fifth inning. Brian McCann got on base when he was hit on the foot by a pitch and a single put two on with no outs. After a ground out advanced them into scoring position, Starlin Castro was intentionally walked to load the bases and put a force out at every base. But Chase Headley had other plans when he hit a sacrifice fly to center field, deep enough to score McCann. Aaron Hicks jumped on the first pitch from Fister and sent it into the right field corner for a two-run triple, putting the Yankees ahead by a score of 6-1.

From the second inning to the sixth inning, CC Sabathia allowed one hit and one walk but he needed some help in the seventh inning. Evan Gattis led off the inning with a solo home run to make it a four-run lead for the Yankees. After retiring the next two batters, Carlos Gomez ended Sabathia’s night on the mound with a single. Anthony Swarzak struck out Preston Tucker to wrap up a good outing by Sabathia.

In 6 2/3 innings, CC Sabathia allowed two runs on four hits with two walks and five strikeouts.

Swarzak returned for the eighth inning and Marwin Gonzalez made it a two home run night as he went deep from both sides of the plate tonight.

Swarzak got the second out of the inning but a walk ended his night. Dellin Betances entered the game and walked the first two batters but a strikeout of Jason Castro with the bases loaded ended the inning with the three-run lead intact.

Andrew Miller gave up a double in the ninth inning but the Yankees closer got the three outs he needed, including two strikeouts to wrap up tonight’s win. The Yankees fourth win in a row continues their hot streak.
