Yankees Game 101: Offense struggles with contact in loss

New York Yankees 1 – Houston Astros 4

After taking the first two games of the three-game series, the Yankees looked to sweep the Houston Astros.

Masahiro Tanaka and Lance McCullers pitched a scoreless first inning but some lack of command came back to haunt Tanaka in the second inning. After striking out Colby Rasmus, Masahiro Tanaka walked Preston Tucker and Alex Bregman before Carlos Gomez put the Astros on the board with a run-scoring single. The Astros continued their scoring in the third inning. With one on and one out, Tanaka threw a wild pitch and it loomed large as Carlos Correa hit a single that added to the Astros lead. Colby Rasmuis dealt the big blow when he hit a two-run home run to right field that doubled the Astros lead to four.

Masahiro Tanaka managed to pitch through five innings but he did not have his best stuff tonight.

In five innings, Masahiro Tanaka allowed four runs on seven hits with two walks and four strikeouts.

Through the first three innings, Lance McCullers allowed three base runners but struck out four. Brian McCann put the Yankees on the board in the fourth inning when he hit a solo home run to deep center field. The Yankees got two more base runners on in the inning but strikeouts of Chase Headley and Aaron Hicks kept the Yankees to just one run.

Following the five innings from Tanaka, the returning Adam Warren pitched a scoreless inning out of the bullpen. Luis Severino made his return to the majors by pitching two no-hit innings with three strikeouts.

Including the two strikeouts to end the fourth inning, McCullers struck out the side in the fifth inning. He went six innings with 10 strikeouts and the bullpen of Ken Giles, Luke Gregerson and Will Harris struck out five to make it a season-high 15 strikeouts for the Yankees in tonight’s loss.
