Yankees game 103: ChiSox get to Mitchell in start

New York Yankees 2 – Chicago White Sox 8

After the offense erupted, the bats were silenced in tonight’s game.

In a spot start, Bryan Mitchell hoped to have the offense that showed up in yesterday’s game. In the first inning, Adam Eaton started with a single. After the first out was recorded, Jose Abreu hit a double to left field, scoring the speedy Eaton to put the White Sox ahead early.

In the second inning, Alexei Ramirez jumped on a fastball and hit a no-doubt solo blast to left field to put the White Sox ahead by two. The bottom of the Yankees order changed things for the offense against White Sox starter John Danks.

Danks shut down the Yankees bats through the first two innings but John Ryan Murphy started the third inning with a double to right field. Brendan Ryan followed with a single to put runners on the corners with no outs. Didi Gregorius did the productive thing with a sacrifice fly, scoring the Yankees first run of the game and pulling them within one. Gregorius wanted more though, as Avisail Garcia robbed the Yankees’ shortstop of three runs when he leapt at the wall in right.

Mitchell settled down in the third and fourth inning, allowing one hit while striking out four but he exited in the fifth inning. After a single and a wild pitch, Tyler Saladino knocked Mitchell out of the game with a run-scoring single. Diego Moreno, the winning pitcher in the monstrous offensive game in Texas, entered in relief of Mitchell but was not sharp. After hitting the first batter he faced, Melky Cabrera took his former team deep with a three-run home run to center field, expanding the White Sox lead to five.

In four innings, Bryan Mitchell allowed four runs on seven hits while walking two and striking out five.

In the sixth inning, the Yankees looked to be rallying against John Danks when Mark Teixeira walked and Chase Headley dropped in a single in right field. With two on and two out, Brian McCann came in as a pinch-hitter against reliever Jake Petricka but McCann grounded out to end the threat.

Diego Moreno surrendered another run in the seventh inning in a rough outing from the bullpen. In three innings, Moreno allowed four runs on four hits and one walk.

The Yankees got a run from Brian McCann when he went deep in the ninth inning but it just reduced it to a six-run loss.

Win – John Danks (6-8)

Loss – Bryan Mitchell (0-1)
