New York Yankees 3 – Tampa Bay Rays 6
After losing the first game of the series, the Yankees turned to Nathan Eovaldi to get them righted.
After a scoreless first inning against Drew Smyly, the Rays struck early against Nathan Eovaldi. With one out, the Rays got a run when Brad Miller took Eovaldi deep to center field for a solo home run. Smyly followed with a scoreless second inning but the Yankees managed some two-out offense in the third inning.
Sandwiched between a pair of outs, Chase Headley got the Yankees first hit, a single in the third inning. With two outs, Brett Gardner hit a two-run home run into the right field seats to give the Yankees the lead.
Needing a shut down inning, Eovaldi let the lead slip away in the bottom half of the third inning.
Tim Beckham led off the third inning with a single and Curt Casali hit a two-run home run that put the Rays back ahead after just surrendering the lead.
The Yankees offense saw rallies fall short in the fourth and fifth inning. In the fourth inning, Mark Teixeira and Starlin Castro got into scoring position but Didi Gregorius flew out to center. In the fifth inning, Chase Headley led off with a walk but Austin Romine grounded into a double play to end momentum before it could develop.
In six innings, Nathan Eovaldi allowed three runs on three hits with two walks and four strikeouts.
