Yankees game 105: McCann, Young go yard in 9-run 7th

Boston Red Sox 3 – New York Yankees 13

The Yankees broke out in the seventh to pull away in the series opener.

After a quick first inning by Masahiro Tanaka, the Yankees came up to the plate to face rookie prospect Henry Owens.

After the first out of the inning, Chris Young got on base with a single. Alex Rodriguez walked and Mark Teixeira came up with a run-scoring single to center field.

With two on and one out, the Yankees looked to get a crooked number on Owens but Brian McCann and Carlos Beltran got the last two outs. 34 pitches and the Yankees managed just one run.

Chase Headley got a hit to start the bottom of the second inning but the Yankees were held silent for the next 12 batters.

In the top of the second inning, Masahiro Tanaka appeared to have a quick inning but Chris Young misplayed a fly ball to left center field when he let it drop between him and a distant Jacoby Ellsbury. Tanaka rebounded and got the last out of the inning. Tanaka retired the next eight in a row before Mike Napoli, who hit the gift-wrapped double in the second inning, got a clean hit in the fifth inning.

Following the one-out double by Napoli, Alejandro De Aza put runners on the corners with a bunt single that featured a collision between Tanaka and Chase Headley.

Both players were okay. Blake Swihart took advantage of the runners on the corners with a single into left center field, tying the game at one. The Red Sox took the lead on a sacrifice fly but the Yankees had a response in the sixth inning.

After Masahiro Tanaka fielded his position when he snagged a line drive with one on, turning it into a double play, Chris Young started the sixth inning with a single off of Owens. Alex Rodriguez hit a deep double to left center field to put runners on second and third with no outs.

Robbie Ross Jr. came on in relief of Owens in the sixth inning and immediately surrendered the tying run when Mark Teixeira hit a single to left field. Brian McCann came up with the go-ahead base hit when he hit a double to right center field. Carlos Beltran grounded out to third for the insurance run and the Yankees had a two-run lead after six innings.

Masahiro Tanaka surrendered a leadoff home run to Pablo Sandoval in the top of the seventh inning, ending his night on the mound. Justin Wilson came in for relief and got Mike Napoli to strikeout for the first out of the inning. Pinch-hitter Rusney Castillo hit a single. Castillo stole second in the middle of Bradley Jr.’s at-bat. A wild pitch got Castillo to third base and this created an unorthodox managerial decision. With the count at 1-2 with two outs, Dellin Betances came on in relief of Justin Wilson. Betances walked Bradley Jr. before another number of pitches went in the dirt for McCann to block. Betances got Brock Holt to strikeout on a curve in the dirt to keep the one-run lead.

In six innings, Masahiro Tanaka allowed three runs on five hits while walking one and striking out three. Early in the game, he looked sharp with splitters diving under bats but pitches got elevated in the fourth inning when the Red Sox scored.

Against righty Jean Machi, Jacoby Ellsbury hit a ground ball to shortstop Xander Bogaerts. The Red Sox shortstop threw it low to Mike Napoli who did not stretch out to make the play and Bogaerts was charged with the error. Little did they know how monumental this error would be. Chris Young walked and Alex Rodriguez added an insurance run with a run-scoring single to center field. Lefty Craig Breslow came in to get Mark Teixeira but Brian McCann got Breslow.

On a 2-2 fastball, McCann hit a deep, second deck, three-run home run to extend the Yankees lead to five. Carlos Beltran and Chase Headley hit back-to-back doubles with the Headley double scoring a run. Brendan Ryan walked and Jacoby Ellsbury hit a single to left to score the Yankees 10th run of the game.

Alexi Ogando was brought in for the favorable matchup against Chris Young but the Yankees left fielder did not wait with Ogando. On the first pitch he saw, Chris Young deposited a three-run home run into left field putting the Yankees ahead by 10.

Branden Pinder and Nick Rumbelow pitched the eighth and ninth inning, respectively, to end tonight’s domination of the Red Sox.

Win – Masahiro Tanaka (8-4)
