Detroit Tigers 3 — New York Yankees 4 (10 innings)
The 12-game winning streak is snapped with Brett Gardner walking off in tonight’s 4-3 win over the Detroit Tigers in 10 innings.
Nova didn’t have the greatest of starts tonight but he put up zeroes through most of his start. In the first inning, Nova started the game with a pair of singles before getting Miguel Cabrera out. He would walk Prince Fielder to load the bases but with an outstanding curve ball, struck out the next two batters he faced. In the second inning, Nova would give up a single to start the inning but would turn to the curve ball again, striking out another two.
Ivan Nova danced with danger, to put it nicely. Through the first five innings, Nova had at least one Tiger reach base.
Brett Gardner would get the offense going with a walk in the first inning. Ichiro would hit a vintage soft fly ball in front of the left fielder and the Yankees had momentum in their favor. Robinson Cano would productively move the runners over with a ground out to the right side of the infield. Alfonso Soriano would ground out but i was enough to bring in the first run of the game. Then, the opinions of the masses were voiced.
The focus of the game was the home debut of Alex Rodriguez. His first at-bat was a mixed reaction of cheers and boos from the sold out Yankee Stadium fans. On four fastballs, Alex Rodriguez would go down swinging to end the inning with the boos holding strong.
In the third inning, the speedsters sparked the offense again. Brett Gardner hit a single to left field and Ichiro would keep racking up the hits, blooping a single in front of the left fielder again. Robinson Cano would hit a ringing double into right center field and both Gardner and Ichiro would score while Cano advanced to third, bringing in two runs.
In the fifth inning, Alex Rodriguez had a shot at winning some fans, with two on and two outs but he would fly out on a routine fly ball to right field.
Nova would finally surrender a run in the seventh inning. Austin Jackson would hit a double and advance on a wild pitch. Miguel Cabrera would jump on the first pitch and bring in the first run for the Tigers.
David Robertson would get the eighth inning and Mariano Rivera would look to rebound from the Wednesday blown save. After getting one out, Austin Jackson would continue being a hitting machine. His fourth hit of the game was a double and it meant the tying run would be coming to the plate. Rivera would get the second out on a ground ball back to him.
Then the matchup of matchups took place.
Mariano Rivera against Miguel Cabrera as the potential tying run. There was a moment that many thought the game was over. Cabrera hit a pop up by the first base dugout and Lyle Overbay approached it. Over running the play, Overbay reached back over the wall in foul territory and missed the ball, extending the at-bat. During this at-bat, Cabrera would take some time limping as he would foul two inside cutters off of his left leg…in a row. While it was effective, it didn’t get the job done. Miguel Cabrera won this round. Brett Gardner would chase and chase the deep fly ball all the way to center field but he would run out of room and the game-tying home run would land in the net over Monument Park.
The game is tied, the save is blown. Wow. Mariano Rivera blows consecutive saves for the first time since April 19 & 24, 2011.
Mariano Rivera would give up a double in the inning but he would get out of it with the game just tied. But it was still too familiar too soon.
To start the bottom of the 10th, the defensive replacement for A-Rod, Jayson Nix, would walk to start the inning. Curtis Granderson would single to right field. Lyle Overbay tried to make up for his miss in the ninth inning but would strike out swinging. The wild pitch that Overbay struck out on allowed runners to advance into scoring position. Eduardo Nunez would be walked for force outs at every base. Chris Stewart would strike out looking and Brett Gardner would come up with two outs.
He would take the first pitch but would hit a ground ball through the infield and the Yankees would celebrate. Walk-off win.
Alex Rodriguez didn’t win himself any cheers. He struck out three times in four at-bats and left four on base.
The walk-off win ended the Yankees four-game losing streak. As said earlier, this win also ended the Tigers’ 12-game winning streak
