Yankees game 114: Greene outduels Porcello in finale

Greene

Detroit Tigers 0 — New York Yankees 1

The pitcher’s duel finale goes the Yankees way to complete a series win.

After taking two out of the first three in a four-game series with the Detroit Tigers, the Yankees called on Shane Greene to look for the series win. The Yankees rookie was on a cruise control throughout today’s day game series finale. After a leadoff walk in the third inning, Greene generated a double play. In the fourth inning, Greene gave up a single to Victor Martinez and a walk to J.D. Martinez with two outs but a strikeout of Don Kelly would end the inning.

On the other side, Rick Porcello was looking to add onto his great season and get his 14th win. The Yankees would score against Porcello in the fourth inning.

After two fly outs, Carlos Beltran would hit a line drive single to center field. Chase Headley would hit a bloop single to left field and runners would be on first and second. Stephen Drew would follow with a shallow fly ball to left field that would bounce into the crowd for a ground-rule double. The double by Drew would score the one run of the game that Shane Greene would need.

Shane Greene would find himself in a tough situation after getting the first out in the sixth inning. Ezequiel Carrera and Ian Kinsler would hit a pair of singles to put runners on the corners with one out. With the potential tying run on third and the powerful Victor Martinez at the plate, Greene would get a double play ball to second baseman Brendan Ryan and Greene was through six innings. Shane Greene would retire six of the next seven and finished eight innings. A leadoff single in the ninth inning would be the end for Shane Greene’s very impressive start.

In a career-high 8 plus innings, Shane Greene allowed no runs on five hits while walking three and striking out five.

David Robertson would get the call for the save with one on and no one out. Robertson would walk Victor Martinez and face one of the best pure hitters in the game as Miguel Cabrera came off the bench as a pinch-hitter. The Yankees closer would get a double play off the bat of Cabrera and a soft pop out to shortstop Stephen Drew ended the game and completed a three-out-of-four series win over the American League Central-leading Detroit Tigers.
