Yankees Game 114: Jays Offense Too Much

New York Yankees 7 — Toronto Blue Jays 10

The Yankees rallied for runs but Hughes’ struggles were too much in today’s 10-7 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays.

Phil Hughes struggles carried over from his start against the Detroit Tigers as he lasted just 4 innings today. On 80 pitches, Hughes was hit around for 7 runs on 9 hits including a two-run home run to Edwin Encarnacion. The biggest and maybe lone offensive threat in the Blue Jays injury-plagued lineup went 3 for 3 against Hughes as many pitches ended up over the plate and were hit hard. Hughes poor start was highlighted by another poor 4th inning. Six runs would come in to score off of Hughes. Ryota Igarashi was called up for today’s game to replace Sabathia on the roster and was called on for 2 innings of relief and he gave up 3 runs on 3 hits and a walk. Cody Eppley and Joba Chamberlain pitched smooth innings of work.

The Yankees offense was baffled by Blue Jays starter J.A. Happ through the first 4 innings of the game. Casey McGehee started the Yankees offense with a run-scoring double in the 5th inning. A solo home run by Derek Jeter and a two-run home run by Robinson Cano in the 6th inning continued the steps towards a potential comeback. The Yankees would put up 3 more runs in the 7th inning by Jayson Nix, Derek Jeter, and Nick Swisher, but there could have been more. With Curtis Granderson on 1st base, Casey McGehee made a bid for a two-run home run with a shot to left field but outfielder Rajai Davis climbed the large walls of the Rogers Centre and robbed McGehee of a home run. Unfortunately the Yankees could not find a way toΒ  get the last 3 runs needed to at least tie the game as they lost the final game of the series, but they won two of the three games.

Win – J.A. Happ (8-10)
