Toronto Blue Jays 0 – New York Yankees 1
After winning the series with the Rays, the Yankees welcomed the Toronto Blue Jays for a three-game series.
The Yankees were not without their opportunities against R.A. Dickey and the Blue Jays. In the first inning, the Yankees got Jacoby Ellsbury and Chase Headley on base but a pair of strikeouts and a pop out stranded them. In the second inning, Brian McCann walked and Gary Sanchez reached base with a single but three consecutive outs squandered another scoring opportunity.
In the fourth inning, the Baby Bomber came through yet again. With one out, Brian McCann and Gary Sanchez were walked before Aaron Judge delivered a line drive into right-center for a run-scoring double to break the scoreless tie.
After four perfect innings by Green, Troy Tulowtizki got a one-out single in the fifth inning to snap the consecutive batters retired at 13. A double by Darrell Ceciliani put two in scoring position but strikeouts of Justin Smoak and Melvin Upton for eight on the night. Green struck out the side for the second time in the night to wrap up his night with 11 strikeouts.
In six dominant scoreless innings, Chad Green allowed two hits and struck out a career-high 11.
While Green was dominant, an insurance run was highly sought and available in numerous opportunities. In the bottom of the sixth inning, McCann led off with a single. With one out, Judge walked and Aaron Hicks reached on a single to load the bases. Jacoby Ellsbury grounded back to reliever Joe Biagini for a force out at home and Chase Headley struck out to strand the bases loaded.
In the eighth inning, Didi Gregorius flew out to right with the bases loaded as the opportunities were put in front of the Yankees but they could not get a hold of it.
Tyler Clippard and Adam Warren pitched a scoreless seventh and eighth inning, respectively. With the one-run lead intact, Dellin Betances was given the slim margin to lock down tonight’s win. After a lead off walk to Josh Thole, a one-out single by Josh Donaldson put runners on the corners with Edwin Encarnacion coming to the plate. Betances buckled down to get a huge, inning-ending double play to secure tonight’s win in the high leverage spot.
The Yankees were 2-for-18 with runners in scoring position and left 14 on base in tonight’s victory.
