Yankees game 121: Greene pitches gem, Captain comes up clutch

Greene

New York Yankees 3 โ€“ Tampa Bay Rays 2

The Yankees are looking to end a five-game losing streak and they turn to the rookie Shane Greene to snap the skid.

In the first inning, Desmond Jennings would start the game with a double but Greene would respond with a pair of strikeouts around a pop out to the catcher. A good pitching effort still needs run support and it would come in the second inning.

After the first two outs, Chase Headley would work a walk to get on base. He would steal second but he could trot his way around the rest of the bases. Martin Prado would go deep for his second home run as a Yankee against the Rays acquired starter Drew Smyly.

Shane Greene would pitch a great game against the Tampa Bay Rays.

He would allow harmless base hits in the second and third inning, two innings that featured a pair of strikeouts. In fact, after a one-out single in the third inning, Greene would retire the next nine batters to get himself into the sixth inning with the lead intact. After getting career-high strikeout number 10, three singles in the sixth inning would plate the Raysโ€™ first run of the game but Greene would get the final out of the inning.

Shane Greene, at 93 pitches, would come out for the seventh inning.

A pitch inside to Curt Casali would just hit his jersey enough for him to get first base. Kevin Kiermaier would try to advance the runner to second base on a bunt but a second of indecision by the Yankees infield would allow Kiermaier to reach. The first two batters reaching would cue the bullpen and the end of Shane Greeneโ€™s day on the mound. Desmond Jennings would advance the runners with a sacrifice bunt and a ground out by Ben Zobrist would plate the tying run. Kelley would finish off the inning and Shane Greeneโ€™s line would be finished as well.

In six plus innings, Shane Greene allowed two runs on seven hits while walking one and striking out a career-high 10. The run inherited by Shawn Kelley scored and leaves Greene with a no decision in regards to todayโ€™s game.

Dellin Betances would pitch a scoreless eighth inning and the ninth inning would be the time for the Yankees to respond.

Against lefty Jake McGee, Brett Gardner would hit a ground ball up the middle that McGee deflected to second baseman Logan Forsythe and the rushed throw would go into the dugout, giving Gardner second base on the error. Derek Jeter, per the usual, would attempt to bunt to advance the runner to third base but he would be unable to get the bunt down. What The Captain would do is hit a Jeterian single to right field past the diving second baseman and Brett Gardner would score, putting the Yankees back in the lead.

In his first appearance in nine days, David Robertson would come in for the save opportunity. The Yankees closer would get a pair of fly outs and a line out for his 32nd save of the season.

The win today snaps the Yankees five-game losing streak and keeps the Tampa Bay Rays away from passing them in the standings.

Today featured the first game in right field for Carlos Beltran in three months. He was a full-time designated hitter after an elbow injury earlier in the season. The injury caused him pain when he tried to throw. He was not involved in any play defensively today.
