New York Yankees 10 — Boston Red Sox 3
A familiar hot bat and a newcomer back Pettitte in tonight’s 10-3 win over the Boston Red Sox.
Brett Gardner started the game with a single and moved to second on a Nunez sacrifice. Gardner would steal third and Robinson Cano walks to put runners on the corners for one of the hottest bats in baseball today, Alfonso Soriano.
The Yankees left fielder went 9 for 16 in the four-game series with the Angels and drove in 14 runs. The 14 RBI came in the last three games. He would make it 15 RBI in four games with a single that gave the Yankees an early lead.
The Yankees recently signed corner infielder Mark Reynolds and with one on and one out, the feast or famine Reynolds would feast. On an 0-2 pitch by Felix Doubront, Mark Reynolds hit a two-run home run on his first Yankees at-bat. The 16th home run for Reynolds gave the Yankees a three-run lead and a ton of momentum.
In the third inning, Alfonso Soriano would tie a MLB record. After Eduardo Nunez hit a single and Robinson Cano reached on an error by Stephen Drew, Soriano would go deep, again. Alfonso Soriano’s fifth home run in four games was a three-run home run. The 18 RBI in four games ties the MLB record. It also gave the Yankees a six-run lead.
Robinson Cano would bring home Eduardo Nunez in the fourth inning. Nunez hit a deep triple to center field that Ellsbury could not get and Cano came through on the first pitch and the Yankees had a solid seven-run lead in place for Andy Pettitte.
The veteran left-hander faced one over the minimum in the first three innings but the defense let him down in the fourth inning. On a single down the third base line, Rodriguez deflected it to foul territory and Eduardo Nunez mishandled it, allowing Pedroia to move to second. Jonny Gomes would bring home Pedroia for an unearned run on Andy Pettitte’s line.
In the seventh inning, Eduardo Nunez would make his second error of the game. A ground ball by Dustin Pedroia would be thrown away by the Yankees shortstop and he would advance to second base. David Ortiz hit a deep single to left field, off of the Monster but Alfonso Soriano made a smart defensive play and got Ortiz out trying to advance to second. Andy Pettitte would allow one more unearned run in the inning but had a great outing.
In 6.2 innings, Andy Pettitte allowed three unearned runs on six hits while walking one and striking out five.
The Yankees would extend their lead in the ninth inning. Ichiro Suzuki, Mark Reynolds and Chris Stewart all hit run-scoring singles to give them a 10-3 lead that would stand in a big win to start a series with the AL East-leading Boston Red Sox. Mark Reynolds brought in three runs in his Yankees debut. It’s always better when he does it against Boston in a race to make the postseason.
