Chicago White Sox 3 – New York Yankees 4

The Yankees would overcome a rough first inning with a great finish.

For Shane Greene, the start for tonight’s game could not have gone worse. Alejandro De Aza and Carlos Sanchez would hit a pair of singles that put two on and no outs for one of the top home run hitters in the league, rookie Jose Abreu. The White Sox powerful first baseman would hit a deep fly ball that carried and carried until it went just over the left field wall. Abreu’s 33rd home run of the season gave the Chicago White Sox a quick three-run lead.By the time the inning was over, eight batters would come to the plate but Greene kept the score at three.

The Yankees threatened with the bases loaded in the second but failed to score. They would not fail in the third inning.

With one on and two out in the third inning against John Danks, Martin Prado would hit his third home run as a Yankee and it would put the Yankees behind by just one run. In the fifth inning, Brett Gardner would be hit by a pitch and Derek Jeter would single to left to put two on to start the inning. Jacoby Ellsbury would come through with a double to right field that scored the tying run and put two in scoring position, still with no one out. Unfortunately the Yankees would not score any additional runs in the inning despite the great opportunity.

While the Yankees rallied to get Greene off the hook for his one bad inning, Greene was nothing like his first inning.

He would give up two hits in the second inning but kept the White Sox off the scoreboard. He looked very sharp in the third inning when he struck out the side and two double plays helped him through the fourth and fifth inning. A hit batter and a single would end Greene’s night on the mound. Shawn Kelley would follow and faced a difficult situation with two on an no outs. Kelley would step his game up and started his appearance with a pair of strikeouts. A single to left field looked to score the go-ahead run for the White Sox but Brett Gardner would throw home and get the out to end the inning and Greene’s pitching line.

In five plus innings, Shane Greene allowed three runs on nine hits while walking two and striking out seven. All three runs scored in the first inning.

Kelley would get one out in the seventh before handing the game to Dellin Betances. He would give up a hit before generating a double play to end the inning. He would strike out two in the eighth inning and kept the game tied. David Robertson would rebound from his last appearance, a non-save situation that went horrible, by striking out two in a perfect ninth inning.

In the ninth inning, Ichiro Suzuki started the inning with a single. Brett Gardner would advance him on a sacrifice and Derek Jeter would fly out to shallow center field. Jacoby Ellsbury would be intentionally walked and Mark Teixeira would walk of the unintentional variety to load the bases for Martin Prado. After falling behind 0-2 to reliever Daniel Webb, Prado would work the count back to full before he hit a single through the infield into center field and the Yankees would be walk-off winners.

For Martin Prado, this is his fifth career walk-off and his first as a New York Yankee.

In the ninth inning, David Robertson would strike out Tyler Flowers to reach a milestone, 500 strikeouts. This is also notable because he is the fastest Yankees pitcher to this milestone.

Win – David Robertson (2-4)

Loss – Daniel Webb (5-4)
