Yankees Game 127: Yankees offense erupts on O’s in win

Baltimore Orioles 4 – New York Yankees 14

The Yankees open an important series with the Baltimore Orioles at home.

Luis Cessa was tasked with the start today and Manny Machado got the Orioles on the board early with a two-out solo home run. However in the bottom half of the inning against Yovani Gallardo, the Yankees had a response. With two outs in the inning, Gary Sanchez got on base with a single and Mark Teixeira let him trot home on his two-run home run to right center field. His 11th home run of the season gave the Yankees a one-run lead.

Cessa worked around two runners in scoring position with a pop out and a strikeout but the offense kept going against Gallardo.

With one out, Chase Headley got on with a single and Aaron Judge walked. Torreyes reached base after replacement center fielder Nolan Reimold could not make the catch. Brett Gardner plated two with a single and Jacoby Ellsbury added one more run on a single. Gary Sanchez laced a double into right field that added two more runs. The double knocked Gallardo out with just 1 1/3 innings. Mark Teixeira wrapped up the six-run second inning with a run-scoring single to put the Yankees ahead by seven.

The game remained 8-1 after three innings and the Baby Bombers defense was on display in the fourth inning. Chris Davis led off with a single to right field and tried to extend it to a double but Aaron Judge denied him extra bases with a strong throw to second and nifty defense to get the tag by Didi Gregorius.

With two outs in the bottom of the fourth inning, Starlin Castro reached with a single and Chase Headley added a two-run home run to right to give the Yankees 10 runs on the night. In the fifth inning, Jacoby Ellsbury reached first with a single off the pitcher Vance Worley and Gary Sanchez made that hurt more when Gary Sanchez hit a monster two-run home run to left field.

The 10th home run came in his first 22 career games, the third fastest pace in major league history.

Manny Machado burned Luis Cessa one more time in the sixth inning when he went deep to right for a two-run home run but it simply chipped at the Yankees lead to nine.

In six innings, Luis Cessa allowed three runs on five hits with one walk and five strikeouts.

In the seventh inning, Aaron Judge led off with a deep double to left field against Mike Wright in his second inning of relief and Ronald Torreyes brought Judge home with a double to right field. Brett Gardner plated the Yankees’ 14th run of the game on a single to right.

Acquired from the Cleveland Indians in the Andrew Miller trade, Ben Heller made his major league debut. The lone base runner reached on an error by Heller but he pitched a scoreless inning of work. Kirby Yates surrendered a run to Jonathan Schoop in the ninth inning but the Yankees secured the win with a 10-run lead in tonight’s win.

Win – Luis Cessa (4-0)
Loss – Yovani Gallardo (4-6)
