Yankees game 129: Eight runs make it five straight

New York Yankees 8 — Kansas City Royals 1

The Yankees had to make a stop to visit the Royals and make up a rain out.

Against Royals pitcher James Shields, an error of his own doing would prove costly. After two scoreless innings, Ichiro Suzuki would hit a ground ball back to Shields, the pitcher would attempt to make the play at first but Ichiro would reach base for a single and advanced on the error. Zelous Wheeler would walk and a pair of ground outs by Jacoby Ellsbury and Derek Jeter would plate the first run.

Like Shields, Michael Pineda cruised for the Yankees through the first two. He would receive a lead and was looking for a shut down inning following the run he received in the top of the third.

Royals third baseman Mike Moustakas would hit a home run to lead off the third inning and just like that, the game was tied. After the home run, Pineda would retire the next 10 Royals to come up. All the Yankees needed to do was bounce back and score again. With one out in the fourth inning, Stephen Drew would hit a home run and put the Yankees back ahead. After a scoreless sixth inning, the Yankees would explode for four in the seventh inning.

Martin Prado would continue swinging a hot bat and hit a leadoff home run in the seventh inning to extend the Yankees lead to two. Chase Headley and Ichiro Suzuki would follow with a pair of singles. Wheeler would unsuccessfully put down a bunt but Jacoby Ellsbury successfully hit a single to right field and scored the Yankees fourth run of the night. Derek Jeter would join the fun and hit a single to left field off of Shields and this brought home Wheeler from third. Brian McCann would hit a fly out to right where Jacoby Ellsbury would try to score on the play. Originally called out, replay would overturn the call and just like that the Yankees were ahead by a score of 6-1.

Michael Pineda would get one out in the seventh before giving up a double to his last batter of the night. In 6.1 innings, Michael Pineda allowed one run on five hits while walking none and striking out five.

Jacoby Ellsbury would add on some additional runs with a two-run home run in the ninth inning. David Huff followed Pineda in the seventh inning and finished off the game with 2.2 scoreless innings. This is the Yankees fifth win in a row.
