Yankees Game 137: Yankees pour it on

Chicago White Sox 1 – New York Yankees 9

The Yankees pour it on in the big fourth inning in today’s 9-1 win over the Chicago White Sox.

In the first inning, the Yankees got their offense in the only way Brett Gardner has liked to recently, with a double. Brett Gardner hit a deep fly double to right center field and had it not bounced over the wall, it would have been a triple. But the double will do. Derek Jeter pulled a single into left field that leftfielder Alejandro De Aza would have a little trouble with and not only did Gardner score, Derek Jeter would get to second base but the one run was all they could get. The hit snapped his 0-for-14 skid.

Then with one out and two strikes on Avisail Garcia, the rain arrived.

A nearly two hour rain delay would knock both starting pitchers out of the game. Phil Hughes lasted just 1.1 innings.

David Huff would come in to pick up where Hughes left off and started by striking out Garcia. The White Sox and Yankees came up aggressive but the aggressive approach to the plate didn’t generate runs until the fourth inning.

Alex Rodriguez started the fourth inning with a double to right field and Vernon Wells would lace a single off the glove of pitcher Dylan Axelrod for an infield single. Curtis Granderson would walk to load the bases with no one out. Mark Reynolds would bring in the second run of the game when he hit a ground ball to third baseman Conor Gillaspie, but he couldn’t reel it in to make a play on it.

Austin Romine would deposit a single into right center field, plating two runs. Brett Gardner would hit another double down the right field line for a run. Derek Jeter would single off of Axelrod too for a run-scoring single of his own. Robinson Cano would get the first out but Alfonso Soriano hit a double down to the left field line and brought in a run of his own. With Alex Rodriguez batting for the second time in the inning, he would pop up for what looked like a routine out for catcher Josh Phegley but he would drop it after it deflects off his glove to extend the at-bat. The extended at-bat would become a walk and that was the end for Axelrod.

Vernon Wells hit into what could have been a double play but Adam Dunn, not known for his defensive effectiveness, would throw the ball into left field for the second error of the inning allowing two more runs to score in a nightmare inning for the White Sox.

In the fourth inning, 13 Yankees came to the plate, two errors were committed by the White Sox and eight runs changed the one-run game into an easy nine-run lead.

David Huff would be touched for one run when Paul Konerko jumped on a first pitch fastball and put it into the second deck in left field in the seventh inning. In this inning, Robinson Cano would make a sparkling catch with his back to the infield and his glove extended to his left. The catch would make one out and Cano would double off the runner at first for an amazing double play.

David Huff came in the game on the second inning and went 5.2 innings of one-run baseball. He gave up five hits while striking out three.

With the lead well in-hand, the Yankees let some fresh faces get their first taste of major league baseball.

In the eighth inning, left-handed reliever Cesar Cabral made his major league debut. The first batter that Cabral faced was rightfielder Jordan Danks. Strike one, two and three. Three straight strikes from Cabral and he achieved a major league milestone for his first strikeout. He would also give up his first major league hit but he got back onto the positives of his debut, striking out Alejandro De Aza before getting a lineout for a scoreless inning in his major league debut.

In the bottom half of the inning, catcher J.R. Murphy pinch-hit for Robinson Cano for his major league debut. With Murphy’s debut, the Yankees set a franchise record for players used in a season with 52.
