Yankees game 139: Long ball beats the Yankees tonight

Toronto Blue Jays 15 – New York Yankees 6

A poor start led to a poor overall night for the Yankees in a huge series with the East-leading Blue Jays.

Luis Severino took the mound for the series opener in the four-game series and got into hot water right away. He started the game by giving up a double to Ben Revere. On a full count, Josh Donaldson adds to his great season with a deep two-run home run to left center field.

After getting the first out on a strikeout of Jose Bautista, Edwin Encarnacion hit a double. Troy Tulowitzki added a third run on a single to left field. Justin Smoak kept the offensive outburst going with a two-run home run to right field, putting the Blue Jays ahead by five before the Yankees came to bat.

The Yankees got a one-out single from Brett Gardner against David Price but could not get a run to score.

After a scoreless second inning, Severino struggled with command in the third inning. He walked two around the first out but Russell Martin plated a run with a single to center field, extending their lead to six.

In just 2 1/3 innings, Luis Severino allowed six runs on six hits while walking three and striking out for. The young righty left pitches up in the zone and did not appear to have command of his pitches, a rare sight in his brief time in the major leagues.

After a one-out double in the third inning by Brendan Ryan, Jacoby Ellsbury reached on an infield single to put runners on the corners. Brett Gardner hit a deep fly ball to right field but was forced to settle for a sacrifice fly, getting the Yankees on the board.

Unfortunately, against reliever Chris Martin, Jose Bautista hit a two-out single and Edwin Encarnacion recovered the run and then some with a two-run home run to left field, extending their lead to seven.

With two on and two out in the fourth inning, Didi Gregorius hit a single to get another Yankees run on the board.

Reliever Andrew Bailey came on for the fifth inning. Russell Martin gave him a rude welcome with a solo home run.

In the sixth inning, LaTroy Hawkins took over for David Price and got the first out. An error allowed Chase Headley to reach and Gregory Bird hit a rocket to right field for a single to put two runners on. Didi Gregorius cashed in once again.

The Yankees shortstop hit a three-run home run to right to bring the Yankees within four.

Chasen Shreve took the mound in the seventh inning but gave up a single to Justin Smoak. The former Yankee Russell Martin dealt another big blow, a line drive, two-run home run to left field. His second home run of the game extended the Blue Jays lead to 6.

The Yankees managed one hit in the final three innings to end a tough loss from the first batter of the game.
