New York Yankees 6 – Baltimore Orioles 5

Mixed set of events goes on in tonight’s 6-5 win over the Baltimore Orioles.

One hour and 18 minutes later, the Yankees game with the Orioles finally got under way.

The Yankees threatened in the first inning but Orioles starter Wei-Yin Chen held them off the scoreboard. Brett Gardner would barely make a check swing during his first at-bat when he struck out looking but he quickly favored his left side slightly. He would not come out for the bottom half of the first inning.

It would be later announced that Brett Gardner had a left oblique strain.

Eduardo Nunez would open up the second inning with a single. Mark Reynolds would stick it to his former team once again with a two-run blast to give the Yankees the lead. The Yankees would go down after with three consecutive strikeouts.

The home run by Mark Reynolds is the 200th of his career.

In the third inning, Alex Rodriguez would start with a very close take on a 3-2 pitch for a walk. Alfonso Soriano would hit a double to put runners in scoring position with no one out. Robinson Cano would work out a walk and the bases were loaded with no one out. Following the walk, Vernon Wells jumped on the first pitch and pulled a single through the left side of the infield for two runs. The Yankees were ahead by four now.

Orioles catcher Matt Wieters would open the bottom half of the third inning with a single. After getting two outs, Hughes and Stewart would have a miscommunication as a pitch would get by Stewart allowing Wieters to go to second. Another wild pitch would allow Wieters to get to third and a single by Machado would bring in the Orioles’ first run of the game. Chris Stewart would also not handle strike three on the third out but he got the batter at first to end a dreadful inning for the veteran catcher.

In the fourth inning, Eduardo Nunez, at third base would make an error that let the lead runner reach. This would oddly be the end of the night for Phil Hughes.

In three innings, Phil Hughes allowed one run on three hits while striking out three. He threw 50 pitches but his night was over.

David Huff took over and would retire eight of the 10 that he faced. The last batter he faced in the seventh inning would be the first batter he got out, Nick Markakis. Unfortunately, Markakis would take Huff deep for the only run he allowed in his three innings of relief work. Adam Warren would help Huff out in the seventh inning but he would also get into his own hot water when a single and a walk put runners on with two outs.

Curtis Granderson would add some insurance in the seventh inning when he took Wei-Yin Chen deep to end his night.

With a 5-2 lead, the Yankees went to David Robertson as the bridge in the eighth inning to Mariano Rivera. The first batter that Robertson faced would hit a deep fly ball to left field and it seemed like it would be a home run. Alfonso Soriano would deny that by leaping and robbing him of the home run. Chris Davis would strike out but a pair of singles by Adam Jones and Nick Markakis would put the potential tying run up in the form of Danny Valencia. With a deep fly to center field, Curtis Granderson wouldn’t be able to save Robertson like Soriano and the three-run home run tied the game. J.J. Hardy would hit a double but a strikeout of Matt Wieters would keep the game tied.

Against Orioles closer Jim Johnson, Brendan Ryan would get his first Yankees hit, a single to lead off the top of the ninth. Chris Stewart would try to advance Ryan but Jim Johnson made a wide throw to second on a force attempt and both runners would be safe on the throwing error. Curtis Granderson would successfully sacrifice the runners into scoring position.

Why let the power-hitting Granderson bunt? Because a wild pitch can score the runner from third.

Jim Johnson would spike a pitch and it would get away from Matt Wieters. Brendan Ryan would easily score and the Yankees retrieved the lead. The Yankees wouldn’t put up anymore runs but the game would be handed to Mariano Rivera.

The Yankees closer would get the Orioles out in order. Despite entering with the lead and by result a save opportunity, the scorer decided that Robertson was not deserving of the win because of his poor appearance. Mariano Rivera is credited with the win and most importantly, the Yankees took three out of four in Baltimore.

Win – Mariano Rivera (6-2)

Loss – Jim Johnson (3-6)
