Yankees game 15: Offense heats up in the cold

New York Yankees 13 โ€“ Detroit Tigers 4

Even with snow, the Yankees bats could not be chilled down against Tigers ace, David Price.

In the first inning, Jacoby Ellsbury would have a rough start to a night in 38 degree weather with the hard-throwing Price as he took a pitch off the chest. You donโ€™t see that everyday. Chris Young would follow with a single to put runners on first and second. Alex Rodriguez would strike out for the first out but the Yankees would not slow down. Mark Teixeira would walk to load the bases and Brian McCann would hit a bloop single in no manโ€™s land, falling inside the left field line for the first run of the game.

Chase Headley followed with a single that kept the bases loaded but scored the Yankeesโ€™ second run of the game. With the bases still loaded, Gregorio Petit would hit a double to the left-center gap, clearing the bases and giving the Yankees a five-run lead.

Didi Gregorius would walk to put two on with two outs and the lineup would turn over. In his second at-bat of the inning, Jacoby Ellsbury would get a first for the season when he hit a single to left field, scoring Petit for the first run batted in of the season for the Yankees center fielder.

In the first inning, 11 batters came to the plate for five hits that produced six runs. David Price would need 51 pitches to get through the inning. Adam Warren can make a six-run lead stand, right?

Adam Warren would take the mound with a sizable lead but could not find the strike zone. Four of the first five batters to come to the plate were walked by Warren, scoring the Tigersโ€™ first run without the benefit of a hit. Yoenis Cespedes hit a single that Didi Gregorius could not do anything with, allowing the Tigers second run to score. A third run would score on what could have been a double play, but the Yankees settled for a force out at second when Gregorius struggled to get it out of his glove. Alex Avila would hit a single to left field for the Tigers fourth run of the inning in what would be an eventful first full inning in a snowy Detroit night.

In a 37-pitch first inning, Adam Warren walked four and allowed two hits to result in four runs, making it a game, despite the early outburst by the Yankees.

David Price hoped to have settled down with the first two outs in the second inning but Brian McCann kept the inning alive with a single to center field. Carlos Beltran would hit a sharp line drive to left-center field that would score Brian McCann from first base and Carlos Beltran would hustle his way all the way to third base for a run-scoring, two-out triple. Chase Headley liked what Beltran did so much he thought he would mirror it. The Yankees third baseman would go back-to-back three bases with Beltran with a sharp line drive to right-center field, scoring Beltran easily and Headley would get to third base for his own run-scoring, two-out triple.

In just 2 1/3 innings, David Price allowed eight runs on 10 hits while walking three and striking out two.

In the fourth inning, Carlos Beltran would hit a single and Chase Headley would reach base on an error. Gregorio Petit would advance them with a sacrifice bunt and Didi Gregorius would hit a sharp line drive into the right field corner for two runs, giving the Yankees 10 runs tonight.

Adam Warren overcame a very rough first inning, going 5 2/3 innings, allowing four runs on five hits while walking four and striking out three.

By the seventh inning, just one Yankees starter was left without a hit but he would erase that in a big way. With two on and one out against righty reliever Al Alburquerque, Mark Teixeira would hit his fifth home run of the season to right field to extend the Yankees lead to nine.

The Yankees bullpen would be lights out, allowing two Tigers to reach base over the last 3 1/3 innings but held them off the board to put together a resounding win.

After turning seven double plays through the first two games, the Yankees would add two more double plays to a very impressive defensive showing in Detroit.

The Yankees are over .500 for the first time this season.
