Yankees game 16: Ellsbury scores twice in win

New York Yankees 2 – Detroit Tigers 1

In the getaway day, the Yankees stifled the Detroit Tigers on the arm of Masahiro Tanaka.

In the first inning, Masahiro Tanaka ran into some instant trouble. Anthony Gose led off the bottom half of the inning with a double. He would advance to third on a ground out and Victor Martinez would hit the productive sacrifice fly to score the first run of the game.

The sacrifice fly came after a walk of Miguel Cabrera. After the walk, Tanaka would retire the next 10 batters faced as he held the Tigers down. The Yankees offense would struggle mightily against Tigers’ starter Anibal Sanchez.

The Yankees would get their first hit in the second inning with a single by, who else but, Chris Young. The Yankees would not get their second hit of the game until the eighth inning but the first run would come without the benefit of a hit.

In the sixth inning, Jacoby Ellsbury would walk and stole second base, his fourth of the season. Brett Gardner would ground out to the right side, allowing Ellsbury to advance to third. In need of a ball in play, Carlos Beltran would continue his struggles, striking out for his third time in the game. Now in need of a hit with two outs and a runner on third, the runner would take care of things himself, mostly. Ellsbury threatened the idea of stealing home and Anibal Sanchez would commit a blatant balk that brought in the tying run and proceeded to send manager Brad Ausmus to the showers with an ejection.

Masahiro Tanaka would get one out in the seventh inning before the hook came for the Yankees starter, needing Justin Wilson and Dellin Betances to get the final two outs of the inning, keeping him free of a loss on a strong pitching line. In 6 1/3 innings, Masahiro Tanaka allowed one run on three hits while walking two and striking out six.

In the eighth inning, the Yankees would take advantage of the weakest part of the Tigers roster, the bullpen. Tom Gorzelanny stayed on after keeping the Yankees from scoring in the seventh inning. Jacoby Ellsbury would be a presence in today’s game as he started the eighth with a base hit into the gap and he hustled his way into second with a double. Brett Gardner advanced Ellsbury with a sacrifice bunt and after an intentional walk, Brian McCann would come through with a ground out that Miguel Cabrera had difficulty with. Had Cabrera handled the ground out smoothly, he may have had a play at home. Fortunately for the Yankees, it was enough to take the lead.

Dellin Betances would put together a dominant eighth inning that featured two strikeouts in vintage Betances from last year. In the ninth inning, Andrew Miller would face the heart of the Tigers order and handled them soundly. Including a strikeout of Miguel Cabrera and J.D. Martinez, the Yankees would hold on to the one-run lead, taking the game and the series with the AL-best Detroit Tigers.

Win – Dellin Betances (3-0)

Loss – Tom Gorzelanny (0-1)

Save – Andrew Miller (6)
