Yankees Game 18: Home runs beat CC

Robinson Cano was the only Yankee to get a hit in tonight’s loss.

New York Yankees 1 — Tampa Bay Rays 5

Early home runs spelled doom for Sabathia in tonight’s 5-1 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays.

In the first inning, CC Sabathia struggled with location and velocity. On an 0-2 slider, second baseman Ryan Roberts went deep with a solo home run, his first home run of the season. Despite striking out two in the inning, Sabathia would give up yet another home run after a single and a triple put the Rays ahead by two. Shortsop Yunel Escobar would be the one to tag Sabathia with a two-run home run, putting the Rays ahead by four at the end of the first inning.

Third baseman Ryan Roberts would get to Sabathia one more time, his second of the season and of the night, in the third inning. Despite three home runs, CC Sabathia maintained his workhorse reputation. In seven innings, the early inning struggles would be the only runs that he would give up. Seven hits, three being home runs, brought in five runs with two walks and eight strikeouts.

Tampa Bay Rays starter Matt Moore completely dominated most of the Yankees lineup. There was one Yankee that was able to figure out Moore. In three at-bats against the young left-hander, Robinson Cano was able to get the only two hits for the Yankees. The first hit by Cano was his sixth home run of the season.

Matt Moore dominated through eight innings, striking out nine, walking just two while allowing just the two hits he gave up to Cano. Brett Gardner would reach base twice by walk but was held hitless, ending his eight-game hitting streak.

Win – Matt Moore (4-0)

Loss – CC Sabathia (3-2)
