Yankees game 21 preview: 4/28/15

Chase Whitley will make his first start of the season in place of Michael Pineda, whose start got pushed back to Friday at Fenway. Jake Odorizzi (2-1, 1.65 ERA) will be on the bump for the Rays. Whitley will be called up from Triple-A as the Yankees incorporate a sixth starter for the first time this year, something Girardi and Cashman said they would tinker with to give their rotation more rest. In three starts at Scranton/Wilkes-Barre he is 2-0 with a 2.12 ERA. He was 4-3 with a 5.23 ERA in 24 games (12 starts) last season. He made two relief appearances against Tampa Bay last year and didn’t allow a run through four innings.

Odorizzi held the Red Sox to one run in 6 2/3 innings his last time out. He allowed just three hits and struck out and walked three in his fourth quality start of the year. He faced the Yanks back on April 18 at the Trop and gave up three runs on five hits through six, it remains his only loss of the year. He is 2-2 in his career against the Yankees, 1-1 with a 5.82 ERA at Yankee Stadium.

Tidbits:

Brian McCann has eight hits in 13 at bats (.615) against Odorizzi, with two home runs, a double, a triple and six RBIs.
