Yankees game 22: Lose in extras, still win series

Tampa Bay Rays 3 – New York Yankees 2 (13 innings)

In the first inning, the Yankees threatened early with a leadoff single by Jacoby Ellsbury. He would steal second base and advanced on a sacrifice by Chris Young, though it looked like he was trying to reach base. With a runner on third, the Yankees would need just a fly ball or a ball in play but Alex Rodriguez and Mark Teixeira would strikeout in the first of many by the boys in pinstripes.

The game would remain scoreless until the fourth inning.

With two outs in the fourth inning, Michael Pineda would give up a pair of singles to James Loney and Logan Forsythe. Kevin Kiermaier would make the two-out rally leave its mark with a triple to deep right-center, scoring two runs and giving the Rays the lead.

In the fifth inning, the Yankees got on the board with a solo blast from Chase Headley.

His third home run of the season brought the Yankees within one against Rays lefty Drew Smyly. In the sixth inning, Chris Young tied it up, with a solo home run of his own.

Michael Pineda didn’t pitch poorly but would settle for a no decision. In 5 2/3 innings, Pineda allowed two runs to score on six hits while walking none and striking out five.

The closer for yesterday, Chris Martin would pitch a scoreless inning.

The Yankees threatened scoring in the 10th and 11th but Didi Gregorius could not come through and make his β€œYankees moment.”

The last man standing, Chasen Shreve would struggle in his two innings of work.

In the 13th inning, Shreve walked one. He generated the second out but walked Longoria intentionally to get to James Loney. The Rays first baseman would hit a deep soft single to second baseman Stephen Drew in short right field. Drew would be in a helpless situation as Loney reached base and the lead runner, Steven Souza Jr., would come around to score the eventual game-winning run.

Alex Rodriguez had a rough game at the plate. In six at-bats, Alex Rodriguez struck out four times and grounded into the game-ending double play in the 13th inning.
