Yankees game 24: Gardner supplies the offense in strong win

New York Yankees 4 – Boston Red Sox 2

The Yankees looked to take the series win with Nathan Eovaldi on the mound in Boston.

Through the first two innings, the Yankees would threaten scoring against Wade Miley but would see the opportunity pass them by. In the third inning, Didi Gregorius would lead off with a single. A wild pitch allowed Gregorius to advance and Brett Gardner would bring him home. The Yankees left fielder would hit a high fly ball down the left field line that just stayed fair, allowing Gardner to hustle his way around the bases.

He would get the double but his attempt at three bases would fail, getting thrown out for the second out at third base.

After three smooth innings for Nathan Eovaldi, the Red Sox would get to the Yankees righty. Dustin Pedroia opened the fourth inning with a deep home run over the monster to tie the game at one. David Ortiz and Pablo Sandoval would hit a pair of line drive singles around the first out of the inning but a nifty double play started by Didi Gregorius kept the inning from getting worse. In the fifth inning, Chase Headley opened the inning with a double down the left field line. Gregorio Petit hit a bloop single to shallow center field to put runners on first and second (it was too shallow for Headley to advance). Gregorius would put both runners in scoring position with a sacrifice bunt. Jacoby Ellsbury would ground out to the drawn in infield and just when things looked lost, Brett Gardner came through. With two outs, Brett Gardner would hit a base hit to left and two runs would score to give the Yankees a two-run lead.

Eovaldi would allow two hits in the sixth inning but stranded them. He would exit after a walk with two outs. Chris Martin would come in and allow a booming double off the monster by Mookie Betts and it pulled the Red Sox within one. The run scoring would go on the line of Eovaldi.

In 6 2/3 innings, Nathan Eovaldi allowed two runs on seven hits while walking one and striking out two. He stretched out to 111 pitches today and generated eight ground outs in the hitter-friendly Fenway.

Justin Wilson would come on for the eighth inning. He would get David Ortiz to ground out before a walk to Hanley Ramirez. Pablo Sandoval would strike out before Dellin Betances came into the game. The Yankees big righty would strike out Mike Napoli to end the inning.

Chris Young would provide the Yankees with insurance when he hit his sixth home run of the season but Betances, the closer of the day, would not need anything but his catcher. In the ninth inning, Dellin Betances would strike out the three batters to come up and notched his second career save and first of the 2015 season.
