Yankees Game 24: Luis Severino struggles in tonight’s loss

New York Yankees 1 – Baltimore Orioles 4

After a day off, the Yankees looked for a refreshing start in Baltimore against the Orioles.

In the first inning against Chris Tillman, the Yankees got a runner in scoring position when Brett Gardner got a one-out double but he was stranded on second base. Like Tillman, Luis Severino worked around a one-out base runner in the first inning to keep the game scoreless. In the second inning, the Yankees started out well, getting a leadoff walk from Brian McCann and a single from Carlos Beltran. Unfortunately, Starlin Castro grounded right into a double play. Didi Gregorius salvaged the inning with a single through the middle of the infield, putting the Yankees ahead.

The attempt at a shut down inning by Luis Severino was met rudely when Mark Trumbo took the righty deep for a solo home run to leadoff the bottom half of the second. A single and walk followed the home run to continue putting Severino in trouble but he got the next two outs to alleviate some of the stress. Severino committed an error when he went to cover first base and attempted to identify the location of first base before he caught the ball. Fortunately, he escaped with just the one run scoring as he got the third out unharmed.

The game remained tied until the fourth inning. After retiring the first two batters, Severino gave up a double to Jonathan Schoop. Seemingly harmless, Ryan Flaherty hit a ground ball to Mark Teixeira at first base, who threw it to Severino as he looked to cover first base. Reminiscent of the second inning, Severino was unable to catch the ball and tag first base, but this one came at a price as the go-ahead run scored.

In the fifth inning, Alex Rodriguez lightly ran to first base on his ground out, later revealed to be a hamstring injury.

As if the fifth inning could not get any worse, With one on and two outs, Mark Trumbo struck again. The two-run home run is the second home run of the night for the Orioles’ right fielder.

In six innings, Luis Severino allowed four runs, three earned, on five hits with two walks and four strikeouts.

The Yankees managed to get two on base in the sixth inning when Mark Teixeira led off with a walk and Brian McCann hit a single. With one out, Starlin Castro hit a line drive to second baseman Jonathan Schoop. On the line drive, McCann was caught off of first base for a bad luck double play. On the throw to first base, Chris Davis did not initially tag the base but McCann sliding back into first base actually pushed Davis’ foot into the base, ensuring the double play. This was also confirmed after a challenge was made by the Yankees.

The Yankees managed two hits in the final three innings of the game. In a slim positive, the Yankees saw two relievers sharpen back to form when Kirby Yates and Johnny Barbato pitched a scoreless inning each.

The Yankees have lost six in a row.
