Shocked by nine run, 17-hit outburst, Yankees fall by score of 9-1 to Houston Astros, ending the four-game winning streak.
Andy Pettitte couldn’t get things going in the right direction for him in tonight’s start. After getting the first two outs of the game, three consecutive singles brought in the first run of the game. A walk would load the bases for the Astros’ big hitter of the night, catcher Carlos Corporan. The 29-year-old catcher would hit a double to right field to give the Astros a shocking three-run lead.
The fourth inning for Pettitte would start in a similar fashion. He would allow a single before getting the next two outs; the third out would prove to be hard to come by. A pair of doubles would bring in two more runs and put the Yankees even further behind. A pair of hits in the fifth inning would be the end of Pettitte’s night. Adam Warren would take over for Pettitte after 91 pitches. The two runners that Warren inherited would go on to score. The first runner would score on a wild pitch and Carlos Corporan would bring in the other on a two-run home run. A walk and a pair of singles would bring in another run in this four-run fifth inning.
Andy Pettitte finished the night with 4.2 innings, with a season-high seven runs allowed on 10 hits. Meanwhile, Houston Astros starter, Lucas Harrell, simply had the Yankees grounded.
The 27-year-old Harrell induced ground ball after ground ball through most of his 6.1 innings. In fact, the Yankees would not get a ball in the air until Brett Gardner’s line drive base hit in the sixth inning. Five of the eight hits the Yankees got off of Harrell were also on the ground. In total, the Yankees had 11 ground outs, three of them for double plays. Three consecutive singles, the last by Vernon Wells, in the sixth inning would bring in the only Yankees run of the game.
Tonight was Austin Romine’s first start behind the plate for the Yankees in this season. Communication issues between Andy Pettitte and Austin Romine could be a part of the poor start. Brett Gardner, Robinson Cano, and Vernon Wells each got two hits tonight. A star of the Yankees in tonight’s game was the debuting Vidal Nuno. In three innings of relief, the 25-year-old left hander allowed no runs on four hits with two strikeouts. His first career strikeout was Chris Carter.
