Yankees Game 46: Looming error behind CC Sabathia in series loss

Toronto Blue Jays 3 – New York Yankees 1

In the rubber match midday game, the Yankees turned to CC Sabathia.

After a scoreless first inning by CC Sabathia, the Yankees came to bat against JA Happ. After retiring the first two batters, Starlin Castro went the other way with a solo home run into the Yankees bullpen in right center field, putting the Yankees ahead early.

After a scoreless second inning, a fielding error by Didi Gregorius with one out in the third proved very costly. With two outs and one on, Jose Bautista reached base with a single and Josh Donaldson walked to load the bases. Edwin Encarnacion followed with a single to center field, scoring two and putting the Blue Jays ahead.

Against Happ, the Yankees could not get a rally going. In the fifth inning, Chase Headley and Didi Gregorius got on base with a pair of one-out singles but a double play from Austin Romine doused the attempted rally.

Following the Encarnacion single in the third inning, CC Sabathia retired 12 of the last 13 he faced with Michael Saunders reaching base when he was hit by a pitch.

In seven innings, CC Sabathia allowed two runs, none earned, on two hits with one walk and seven strikeouts. Sabathia pitched a fantastic game in which he becomes an unfortunate losing pitcher.

After a scoreless eighth inning by Dellin Betances, Aroldis Chapman came in for the ninth inning. Despite striking out two batters, Chapman gave up singles to Justin Smoak, Kevin Pillar and a run-scoring single to Devon Travis, scoring an insurance run for the Blue Jays closer.

Closer Roberto Osuna took the mound in the ninth inning and set the Yankees down in order, including strikeouts of Carlos Beltran and a returning Alex Rodriguez. The Yankees designated hitter was hitless in four at-bats with two strikeouts.
