Yankees game 5: Miscues costly in defeat

Boston Red Sox 8 — New York Yankees 4

Less than 12 hours after a marathon affair, the Boston Red Sox and the New York Yankees went at it one more time.

Adam Warren was given the tall task of going as deep into the game as he could to help out a very limited bullpen. Warren would hold the Red Sox scoreless through the first inning but a first for first base would be costly. With Alex Rodriguez playing first base for the first time in a regular season game, a ground ball to shortstop Didi Gregorius would be thrown to Rodriguez. Unfortunately, Rodriguez would not be able to handle to throw and was charged with an error. A pair of ground outs moved Mike Napoli to third base and Daniel Nava would hit a deep fly ball to left field. Brett Gardner would get turned around on the fly ball and it fell for a run-scoring double.

In the bottom half of the second inning, The Yankees looked poised for a big inning. Alex Rodriguez started the inning with a single to left field. One out later, Garrett Jones and J.R. Murphy would walk to load the bases. Didi Gregorius would hit a sacrifice fly to left field and the Yankees tied the game up but that would be all the Yankees could do in the inning.

Joe Kelly would retire the next 17 batters he faced after the Murphy walk. This would be telling of how the game goes for the Yankees. In seven innings, Kelly allowed one run on one hit while walking two and striking out eight.

In the fourth inning, Adam Warren would get the first two outs before Pablo Sandoval hit a single to center field. Allen Craig would walk and Daniel Nava would continue being a thorn in the Yankeesโ€™ side, hitting a run-scoring single to center field and getting the Red Sox the lead again.

In 5 1/3 innings, Adam Warren allowed two runs, one earned, on five hits while walking two and striking out one. He threw a career-high 98 pitches and gave the Yankees a very strong first start of the 2015 season.

After Warren exited the game, Justin Wilson kept the Red Sox off the scoreboard. Chris Martin would come in for the seventh inning with one on and no outs. One out later, Xander Bogaerts would steal second base and advanced to third on a wide throw by Murphy. On a ground ball to Chase Headley, the Yankees would get no outs as the throw home would be too late, scoring another Red Sox run. Another single by Brock Holt would be followed up with a double by Dustin Pedroia, scoring two runs and extending the Red Sox lead to 5-1.

Matt Tracy would come out for his major league debut. After getting the first two outs, a throw by Chase Headley would be an error when Alex Rodriguez was pulled off of first base to extend the inning. After a single and a walk, Brock Holt would hit a deep fly ball to right field. Garrett Jones made a stretch to get it but it deflects off his glove for a three-run double, extending the lead to seven.

To reflect the impact the defense is having on the Yankees games, half of the runs the Red Sox scored were unearned including all the runs that scored against Tracy. After five games this season, the Yankees have committed eight errors.

In the eighth inning, the Yankees showed signs of life in the offense. With two outs, Gregorio Petit and Brett Gardner would get on base with a pair of singles against Alexi Ogando. Chris Young would hit a three-run home run to deep left field and the Yankees were down by just four.

Unfortunately for the Yankees, this would be as close as they could get and would lose their third straight game. The Yankees will look to avoid the sweep in tomorrow nightโ€™s series finale with the rival Red Sox.
