Yankees Game 52: Offense silent behind Masahiro Tanaka

New York Yankees 0 – Toronto Blue Jays 7

The Yankees looked to Masahiro Tanaka to hold the Blue Jays down so the Yankees offense can find what its missing.

After the Yankees were set down in the first inning against Aaron Sanchez, Masahiro Tanaka followed with a scoreless first inning of his own. In the second inning, Devon Travis reached with a two-out single. A wide pickoff throw by Tanaka allowed Travis to reach third base but a ground out to third prevented the run from scoring.

In the third inning, Masahiro Tanaka gave up a pair of infield singles to start but three fly outs prevented the Blue Jays from scoring again. In the fourth inning, the Yankees got an extra-base hit from Alex Rodriguez with a one-out double to center field but Didi Gregorius and Chase Headley struck out to strand Rodriguez.

It took until the fifth inning for the bend-not-breaking of Masahiro Tanaka to end.

After a lead off single by Darwin Barney, he advanced on a ground out and scored on a single by Josh Donaldson. He was caught between first and second to help minimize the damage. In the sixth inning, Michael Saunders led off with a double. On a casual fly ball to Jacoby Ellsbury in center field, the Yankees outfielder dropped the catch and bobbled it a pair of times, allowing Justin Smoak to reach first, putting runners on the corners. Russell Martin hit into a double play but the duration of it allowed a run to score.

In six innings, Masahiro Tanaka allowed two runs, one earned, on seven hits with one walk and two strikeouts. While the strikeouts were down, the outing was strong by the Yankees ace.

In the seventh inning, Kirby Yates came in and surrendered a lead off single to Kevin Pillar. After a stolen base by Pillar, Darwn Barney walked to reach base for the third time. After a pop out, Josh Donaldson walked to load the bases before Edwin Encarnacion doubled the lead with a single to right field. Michael Saunders welcomed Nick Goody into the game with a double and Justin Smoak added a two-run single, putting the Blue Jays ahead by seven, a lead that stood in tonight’s shutout.
