Yankees Game 58: Beltran powers the Yankees, Pineda to victory

Los Angeles Angels 3 – New York Yankees 6

Looking to build on his last good start, Michael Pineda took the mound for the second game against the Los Angeles Angels.

After a scoreless first inning by Michael Pineda (yes, really); the Yankees faced a familiar face in spot starter David Huff. Brett Gardner reached base on an infield single but was replaced on the bases by Rob Refsnyder after a potential double play. Fortunately, Carlos Beltran is swinging a bat of fire as he went deep with a two-run home run to left field.

The home run was the 1,000th career extra base for the switch-hitter.
After a pair of singles by Alex Rodriguez and Starlin Castro, Chase Headley grounded out to third baseman Yunel Escobar. The Angels third baseman forgot how many outs as he opted for a force out at third instead of a double play. Austin Romine took advantage of the extra out with a run-scoring single to left field. Pineda added a scoreless second inning as the offense continued supporting him.

In the second inning, Aaron Hicks led off with a double and Brett Gardner reached first after a throwing error by David Huff. With runners on the corners, Rob Refsnyder brought home a run on a sacrifice fly. In the third inning, Starlin Castro added a solo home run off the right field foul pole to extend the lead to five.

The Yankees did not add a run in the fourth inning and with a five-run lead, Pineda put it all to use.

In the fifth inning, Rafael Ortega opened with a double. After one out, Gregorio Petit plated a run on a single. After the second out was recorded, Kole Calhoun found a Yankee Stadium treat with a two-run home run to right field to bring the five-run lead down to just two. Despite the rough fifth inning, Pineda bounced back with two perfect innings to wrap up a strong outing.

In seven innings, Michael Pineda allowed three runs on four hits with two walks and four strikeouts.

The Yankees got an insurance run from a single by Alex Rodriguez in the seventh inning but Dellin Betances and Andrew Miller shut down the Angels.

In the eighth inning, Dellin Betances struck out two in a perfect inning. For the close, Andrew Miller struck out one with the tying run at the plate after a one-out double C.J. Cron as he was stranded.

Win – Michael Pineda (3-6)
