Yankees game 61: Bullpen struggles in loss

New York Yankees 4 – Baltimore Orioles 9

Bullpen woes strike again in tonight’s game with the Orioles.

In the first inning, the Yankees found two-out magic against Bud Norris. Chase Headley hit a double to center field between two outs and Mark Teixeira cashed in. The Yankees first baseman hit a single to left field and they had a one-run lead. Brian McCann followed with a double to center field as a hustling Teixeira rounded third and scored before the tag at home. The Yankees took a two-run lead before CC Sabathia took the mound.

After two scoreless innings, CC Sabathia struggled in the third inning. Manny Machado started the third with a single. Nolan Reimold dealt the big blow when he hit his second home run of the year. The two-run blast by Reimold tied the game in the statistically worst inning over the course of the left-handed Sabathia’s career.

While Norris retired 11 Yankees in a row, Sabathia got burned by one of the same Birds one more time..

After a leadoff single by Ryan Flaherty, the lineup turned over and Manny Machado struck for a two-run home run just to the left of center field. The Orioles staked themselves to a two-run lead and looked to get more when Nolan Reimold followed with a triple to deep center, beyond a leaping Mason Williams. A pair of ground outs and a strikeout of Chris Davis stranded Reimold, keeping the deficit at just two.

The Yankees started to hit Norris hard in the sixth inning, as they attempted to rally back.

Chase Headley led off with a line drive single to right. Alex Rodriguez followed with a opposite field two-run home run to right center field. A milestone was reached and surpassed with the game-tying blast. Not only was Alex Rodriguez’s 2,000th RBI on base; he became the 2,001st RBI. Alex Rodriguez became the second player all-time to reach 2,000 career RBI.

And for those that like to bash the slugging Rodriguez, the home run made it 666 for his career. Enjoy.

After Rodriguez went deep, Mark Teixeira hit a double to the gap in right center. Brian McCann hit a ground ball to first baseman Steve Pearce, who made a heads-up play, throwing out Teixeira at first base for the fielder’s choice and taking a runner out of scoring position. This proved to be very significant when Didi Gregorius hit a two-out double to right field, advancing McCann to third only. T.J. McFarland walked one batter in relief of Norris but Chaz Roe got pinch-hitter Chris Young to fly out to center field to end the threat.

In five innings, CC Sabathia allowed four runs on eight hits, walking none and striking out three.

With the game tied, Chris Martin replaced Sabathia on the mound. He started the inning by falling behind Matt Wieters and surrendering a leadoff double to the switch-hitting catcher. A wild pitch allowed Wieters to advance to third base, eventually scoring on a single by J.J. Hardy to give the Orioles the lead. One out later, Ryan Flaherty hit a single to put two on. The second wild pitch of the inning by Martin advanced the two runners into scoring position. Two runs scored when Manny Machado hit a single to right field, advancing to second on a weak throw by the defensively-struggling Carlos Beltran.

In just one inning, Chris Martin allowed three go-ahead runs on four hits. Martin threw three wild pitches in his inning of work.

After Martin, Sergio Santos made his Yankees debut after being added to the 40-man roster earlier today. The first batter Santos faced, pinch-hitter David Lough, got a hold of a hanging slider and barely got it over the wall. A challenge of the initial in-play ball call changed it to a home run. Poor first impression, Sergio. The Orioles scored another run against Santos with a pair of doubles

Sergio Santos allowed two runs on three hits in his two innings of relief.

The Yankees threatened to score in the eighth inning but a line drive double play ruined that and was the last possible scoring opportunity the Yankees presented.

Win – Chaz Roe (2-0)

Loss – Chris Martin (0-2)
