Yankees game 64: Awful return to Miami for Eovaldi

New York Yankees – Miami Marlins

In a matchup of players traded for each other, the Marlins gave Nathan Eovaldi a rude welcome back.

In the past offseason, David Phelps and Nathan Eovaldi were a part of a trade involving each other and tonight they went head-to-head. After a scoreless first inning by Phelps, Nathan Eovaldi got the first out in the bottom of the first and it all went downhill from there.

Derek Dietrich, Christian Yelich and Giancarlo Stanton followed with one-out singles, loading the bases. Marcell Ozuna plated the first runs with a two-run single and Justin Bour kept it going with a run-scoring single of his own. J.T. Realmuto kept the Marlins’ good times going with a single too. Adeiny Hechavarria made a splash on the hit parade with a triple to left field, scoring two more runs. After pitcher David Phelps recorded the second out of the inning, the lineup turned over and Dee Gordon joined the hit parade with a run-scoring single. Dietrich got his second hit of the inning, a run-scoring double that mercifully ended Eovaldi’s return to Miami. Chris Capuano got the last out of a dreadful first inning. In the first inning, every batter except the pitcher got at least one hit.

In just 2/3 of an inning, Nathan Eovaldi allowed eight runs on nine hits without a walk or a strikeout. Not remotely close to the kind of return Eovaldi wanted against his former team.

Through the next three innings, Chris Capuano managed to keep the Marlins off the scoreboard. Meanwhile, the Yankees had two hits against their former pitcher.

In the fifth inning with two outs and two on, Capuano had hit his wall and reliever Chris Martin came in for the unenviable task of facing slugger Giancarlo Stanton. The Marlins right fielder got a hold of a 2-1 pitch and went the other way with a three-run home run to right center. His 24th home run of the season put the Marlins ahead by double digits at 11 runs.

The Yankees avoided the shutout in the sixth inning. With two outs, Didi Gregorius got on with a single to right field. Mark Teixeira worked the count and drew a walk. On a line drive single through the shifted infield, Brian McCann plated the first Yankees run when Gregorius scored.

With regulars resting in the seventh inning, bench players contributed to the second Yankees run. With one out, pinch-hitter Stephen Drew walked. Then with two outs, Garrett Jones hit a single to left and Mason Williams laced a double into the left field corner for the Yankees second run, though unfortunately last run, of the game.

In seven innings, David Phelps held his former team to two runs on six hits with two walks and five strikeouts.

In the eighth inning, Jose Ramirez gave up the 12th and final Marlins run in a game decided in the first inning.

Win – David Phelps (4-3)
