Yankees Game 64: Enormous night of offense goes to the Rockies

New York Yankees 10 – Colorado Rockies 13

The Yankees took to the road for National League baseball with a visit to the Colorado Rockies.

Against Jorge De La Rosa, the Yankees started with singles from Jacoby Ellsbury and Brett Gardner but a double play by Starlin Castro stalled a potential rally. Nathan Eovaldi pitched a perfect first inning but the Rockies got to him in the second inning. Carlos Gonzalez led off with a double and scored on a two-out double by Mark Reynolds.

Eovaldi managed a clean third inning but the Rockies got to him in the fourth inning.

Carlos Gonzalez started the fourth inning with a single and shortstop Trevor Story hit the two-run home run. Prior to the third inning, Story injured left fielder Gerardo Parra in the field so Ryan Raburn took over.

Batting behind Story, Raburn went back-to-back to put the Rockies ahead by four. Eovaldi could not retire a batter in the fifth inning. Charlie Blackmon reached with a single and stole second. DJ LeMahieu brought him around on a single and he scored on a double by Nolan Arenado, ending the night for Nathan Eovaldi.

In four innings, Nathan Eovaldi surrendered six runs on eight hits with two walks and two strikeouts. Lately, Eovaldi has looked nothing like he did in April. He surrendered at least five runs in his last three starts now. Nick Goody came in to finish the inning.

In the sixth inning, reliever Gonzalez Germen took over for De La Rosa and got the first out but Brian McCann walked and Chase Headley hit a single. With two outs, Didi Gregorius hit a line drive into the right field seats for a three-run home run, cutting the six-run deficit in half.

Unfortunately, reliever Kirby Yates was unable to shut down the Rockies after the three-run sixth inning.

Yates walked one and got the first out but a single by Blackmon was followed with a pickof error, allowing a run to score. After another walk, Richard Bleier came on for the lefty Carlos Gonzalez. The Rockies’ right fielder hit a single and Trevor Story added a single of his own, erasing the three runs the Yankees managed to get in the sixth inning.

The Yankees were held off the scoreboard in the seventh inning but the Rockies kept going. Mark Reynolds and Nick Hundley got on base and pinch-hitter Daniel Descalso brought them both home with a two-run triple. He came to score on a sacrifice fly and the Rockies plated 12 runs in the game.

Despite being down by nine, the Yankees were not going to go down quietly.

Against reliever Justin Miller, the Yankees got the first out before the offense came to life. Rob Refsnyder led off with a single and Didi Gregorius reached on a single of his own. Aaron Hicks reached with a single to load the bases with one out. Pinch-hitter and new Yankee Ike Davis made a positive first impression with a run-scoring single.

Jacoby Ellsbury followed with a two-run single and Miguel Castro replaced Miller in relief but proceeded to hit Brett Gardner with a pitch to load the bases again. Starlin Castro reached first on a single and a wild throw by Miguel Castro allowed another run to score, bringing the Yankees within four. Brian McCann grounded out to bring another run and Chase Headley came up for the second time but got a single this time, scoring a run. By the time the inning ended, the Yankees scored seven runs on eight singles to bring them within two.

In the eighth inning, Andrew Miller took over but surrendered a solo home run to Carlos Gonzalez to start the inning. He rebounded to strikeout the side but the Yankees went down in order in the ninth inning, falling three runs short of a tie.
