Yankees game 68: Fireworks on Old Timer’s Day

Detroit Tigers 3 – New York Yankees 14

On a day to recognize the greats of the past, the present made its presence felt.

After a pair of greats were added into Monument Park, the game that counts was under way. Nathan Eovaldi pitched a scoreless first inning and the Yankees came to the plate against the Tigers. Brett Gardner got the offense going in a great way. After Chase Headley struck out, the infield came in and Alex Rodriguez tested their nerves. The Yankees designated hitter hit a sharp grounder to third baseman Andrew Romine. The brother of the Yankees’ Austin tried to make the out at home but the fielder’s choice went wide of home. The first run scored and the error allowed Rodriguez to advance to second.

In the second inning, the offense got going quickly and it was on the bat of Didi Gregorius. The Yankees shortstop got the inning started with a bang, when he hit his fourth home run of the season. After the home run, Stephen Drew got a single and Brett Gardner got a one-out double. Chase Headley walked to load the bases and Alex Rodriguez had the chance to bust the game open but he settled with a sacrifice fly. The bases were loaded one more time after Mark Teixeira walked but the Yankees settled for just two runs in the inning.

Like the second, the third inning started with a bang too. Carlos Beltran led off the third inning with a home run off of Alfredo Simon. Center fielder Anthony Gose robbed Didi Gregorius of a base hit with a great dive in left center field but the Yankees put the finishing touches on Alfredo Simon. Chris Young got a two-out single and Brett Gardner continued his impressive night with a single.

The third hit of the night for Brett Gardner left him a home run short of the cycle…in the third inning.

Chase Headley plated one more against Simon before he got removed from the game. With two on and two out, Alex Rodriguez came up to the plate against left-handed reliever Ian Krol. On a 1-1 pitch, Alex Rodriguez hit a laser to left field and the no-doubt, three-run home run extended the Yankees lead to eight.

In 2 2/3 innings, Alfredo Simon allowed seven runs on eight hits, three walks and struck out two.

On the pitching side, Eovaldi put the lead to good use as he kept the ball in the zone. Through the first four innings, Eovaldi allowed just one hit. In the fifth inning, he did allow his second hit of the game but it could have been his third if Brett Gardner did not make a very impressive leaping catch to rob Yoenis Cespedes of extra bases.

In the fourth inning, Carlos Beltran had himself a switch-hitter’s dream.

After hitting for a home run from the left side in the third inning, he added a home run from the right side against Krol, his seventh of the season. Chris Young added the 10th Yankees run of the game with a single after Gregorius and Drew reached with a pair of singles.

In the fifth inning, after the wholesale β€œconcede” substitutions by the Tigers, the Yankees did not take their foot off the gas pedal. Chase Headley and Alex Rodriguez started the inning against Tom Gorzelanny with a pair of singles. Mark Teixeira walked to load the bases and Brian McCann singled home a run. Carlos Beltran was hit by a pitch to score a run the painful way and Didi Gregorius added one more run on a ground out.

Nathan Eovaldi started to run out of gas in the seventh inning when he gave up a leadoff double to Rajai Davis. After a walk of Victor Martinez, Eovaldi got the hook but not without a well-deserved standing ovation from the Yankee Stadium crowd. Reliever Bryan Mitchell allowed three runs to score on a pair of hits but got out of the inning with the sizable lead well intact.

In six innings, Nathan Eovaldi allowed two runs on three hits with one walk and four strikeouts.

With the game well out of reach for the Tigers, position player Josh Wilson took the mound in the eighth inning and Chris Young added the fifth and final home run of the night.

Overall, the Yankees recorded 14 runs on 18 hits with five home runs and at least one hit by every starter except for Mark Teixeira, who unfortunately never got into the hit parade but did walk twice and scored once.

Win – Nathan Eovaldi (6-2)

Loss – Alfredo Simon (7-4)

Save – Bryan Mitchell (1)
