Yankees Game 73: Michael Pineda pitches team over .500

Minnesota Twins 1 – New York Yankees 2

After a strong showing yesterday, the Yankees continued their series with the Minnesota Twins as Big Mike looked to keep the winning ways going.

Michael Pineda and Ervin Santana pitched a scoreless first inning but the Twins managed to draw the first run in the second inning. After falling behind in the count to Brian Dozier, the Twins’ second baseman sent a no-doubt solo home run to left field to put the Twins ahead early.

After the home run, Michael Pineda settled down, retiring 14 of the next 16 including seven of the last he faced as he gave the Yankees a chance to stage a comeback.

In six innings, Michael Pineda allowed one run on two hits with a walk and eight strikeouts.

Ervin Santana held the Yankees silent through the first four innings. The Yankees managed two singles and two walks through the first four innings but a two-out rally refreshed things for the Yankees. After the bottom of the order produced the first two outs, Jacoby Ellsbury got on base with a single and Brett Gardner followed with a single of his own. With the two fastest on the bases, Carlos Beltran‘s single easily scored Ellsbury to tie the game, 1-1.

Through five innings, Ervin Santana allowed one run on six hits with two walks and two strikeouts. Both starting pitchers did not factor into the decision.

After Taylor Rogers held the Yankees silent out of the bullpen, Ryan Pressly came on in the eighth inning. Alex Rodriguez led off with an infield single and was replaced on the bases by Aaron Hicks. Brian McCann laced a single into the right field corner to put runners on the corners with no outs. After a strikeout of Mark Teixeira, Starlin Castro hit a potential double play ball that Eduardo Escobar could not grab as the error allowed Hicks to score the go-ahead run. A single by Didi Gregorius loaded the bases but a fly ball to shallow left field by Chase Headley became a double play ending the inning with a one-run lead.

After six innings by Pineda, Dellin Betances and Andrew Miller pitched a scoreless seventh and eighth inning, respectively. Aroldis Chapman came on after the Yankees claimed the lead in the eighth inning, looking for the save. After getting the first two outs, Joe Mauer kept the inning alive with a single but Brian Dozier struck out to end the game.

The third win in a row put the Yankees over .500 and in line for a potential sweep.
