New York Yankees 3 — Baltimore Orioles 4

CC loses his no-hitter and then the game in tonight’s 4-3 loss to the Baltimore Orioles.

The Orioles decided to let reliever T.J. McFarland make his first major league start tonight. The left-hander struggled right away. Brett Gardner would lead off the game with a double and Robinson Cano would bring him home with a single. The Yankees would have another scoring opportunity in the second inning with two on and one out but Alberto Gonzalez would strikeout and Gardner would fly out to end the inning.

The Yankees would get to McFarland in the third inning with three consecutive singles, the last one by Vernon Wells to bring in the second run of the game. Later in the inning, Chris Stewart would single in another run and that would be enough for manager Buck Showalter to bring in another starter, prospect Kevin Gausman.

The Orioles reliever would give them 4.1 scoreless innings with just three hits. Holding the Yankees to just the three runs they got off McFarland.

In a start meant to be made by David Phelps, the Yankees chose to go to CC Sabathia instead. Early on, the move looked to be…perfect.

Through the first five innings, the only baserunner for the Orioles was on an error by third baseman Alberto Gonzalez. But in the sixth inning, the no-hitter would end with a sharp single by Nate McLouth. The no-hitter would be more than what Sabathia lost from this point on. An infield hit fielded by Sabathia would produce no out when David Adams vacated first base too. An out would follow but Manny Machado hit a two-run double to put the Orioles within one. After Machado advanced to third on a fly out, Adam Jones hit a weak infield single that Sabathia couldn’t get to quick enough and the Orioles tied the game.

In the seventh inning, the Orioles would complete their comeback. With two outs, Nate McLouth, the player who ended Sabathia’s no-hitter, would hit a home run to deep right field to put the Orioles ahead and the Yankees would lose.

Win – Kevin Gausman (1-3)

Loss – CC Sabathia (8-6)
