Yankees Game 81: Teixeira reaches milestone in win

New York Yankees 6 – San Diego Padres 3`

After losing the first two games, the Yankees looked to deny the sweep.

Chad Green and Andrew Cashner had a clean first inning but the Yankees scraped out a run in he second inning. Didi Gregorius reached first on a fielding error by Alexei Ramirez and advanced to third on a single by Aaron Hicks. Ronald Torreyes grounded into a double play but Gregorius scored to put the Yankees ahead.

Looking for a shut down inning, Chad Green fell behind in the count to Yangervis Solarte and the former Yankee went the other way with a solo home run, tying the game at one. Green bounced back with a couple strikeouts and Didi Gregorius continued fueling the offense.

With one out in the fourth inning, Gregorius hit a line drive solo home run, his ninth of the season, into right field to put the Yankees back ahead. In the bottom of the fourth inning, Wil Myers led off with a single and two were in scoring position when Solarte hit a one-out double to right field. In a jam, Green got Alex Dickerson to line out back to him and he stayed calm and composed in the situation as he threw to second base to double off Solarte to end the inning in an unconventional way.

In six innings, Chad Green allowed one run on three hits without a walk. He struck out eight in a great spot start.

Dellin Betances danced his way out of trouble in the seventh inning when he allowed two into scoring position but stopped them right there with strikeouts of Derek Norris and Ryan Schimpf.

In the top of the eighth inning, a career milestone was reached for the Yankees first baseman. Mark Teixeira hit his 400th career home run, the fifth switch hitter to reach the milestone, to lead off the eighth inning and provide the Yankees with insurance. Andrew Miller got into a jam in the eighth inning when he allowed a single and a walk. With two outs, Miller got Matt Kemp to ground out to a sliding Mark Teixeira, who tossed it to Miller to end the inning.

In the top of the ninth inning, Jacoby Ellsbury got on with a one-out walk and stole second base. He made his way home on a single by Brett Gardner, extending the lead to three. Mark Teixeira did not sit on 400 for long as he made it a two home run night, hitting a two-run home run to right center field to make it a five-run lead.

With a five-run lead in the ninth inning, Anthony Swarzak came on but Yangervis Solarte got on base for the fourth time of the night and Alex Dickerson made it a save situation with a two-run home run to right center field. Aroldis Chapman got the call and got the three outs needed for the save and to leave San Diego on a positive note.
