Yankees Game 82: Sabathia, Yankees lit up for eight in loss

New York Yankees 2 – Chicago White Sox 8

On the fourth of July, the Yankees continued their road trip in Chicago, against the White Sox.

After a scoreless first inning between veterans, CC Sabathia and James Shields, the Yankees got on the board in the second inning. With one on and two outs, Chase Headley pulled it over the right field wall for a two-run home run.

CC Sabathia followed with a scoreless second inning but the White Sox got to him in the third inning. After a single by Jason Coats, the lineup turned over and rookie shortstop Tim Anderson went deep to right center for a tying, two-run home run. The White Sox loaded the bases on an error by Didi Gregorius, a single and a walk but a strikeout and a pop out stranded the bases loaded.

The Yankees loaded the bases in the fourth inning but Aaron Hicks flew out to right, missing a grand slam and stranding the bases loaded

After a scoreless fourth inning for Sabathia, the Yankees lefty ran into a rough road through the middle of the order in the fifth inning. With one out, Todd Frazier laced a double into left field and advanced to third on a single by former Yankee Melky Cabrera. With runners on the corners, Brett Lawrie hit a sacrifice fly to center field to score the go-ahead run. Another former Yankee, Dioner Navarro, added the big blow when he hit a two-run home run to put the White Sox ahead by three. CC Sabathia finished strong but did not exit with the lead.

In six innings, CC Sabathia allowed five runs on eight hits with two walks and nine strikeouts.

Against Luis Cessa in the seventh inning, Todd Frazier hit his second double of the game. After a fly out, Lawrie added a run on a single. With Cessa still in the game in the eighth inning, Didi Gregorius committed his third error of the game with one out to allow Tim Anderson to reach. After a bunt single by Adam Eaton, Jose Abreu and Todd Frazier added a run each with singles that put the White Sox ahead by six.

Despite eight hits by the Yankees, the offense was hitless in 13 opportunities with runners in scoring position.
