Yankees Game 87: Cano, Granderson Strike Early

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim 3 — New York Yankees 5

Robinson Cano hits a home run to extend his hitting streak to 17 games in today’s 5-3 win over the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.

Freddy Garcia put together a decent outing despite going just 5 innings. 5 hits and 5 walks on 98 pitches in his start made him throw high-pressure innings in which he had to do his best to keep the Angels from creating a big inning and he did that. Cody Eppley relieved Freddy Garcia and pitched 2 outstanding innings including an inning through the heart of the Angels lineup. David Robertson and Rafael Soriano combined for dominant 8th and 9th innings, respectively. Both Robertson and Soriano managed to strikeout 2 to close out the win.

Robinson Cano took Angels starter Jerome Williams deep in the 1st inning with Derek Jeter on for his 21st home run of the season. Curtis Granderson also continues to take advantage of the short porch in right field when he hit his 24th home run of the season in the 3rd inning. Cano would also take advantage of an Alex Rodriguez leadoff double and bring him in as Robinson Cano shows no signs of letting the Home Run Derby events (on and off the field) reflect in his second half of the season. The Yankees continue to do many things right as they went 3 for 5 with runners in scoring position and what is the most impressive is that this is not the team at full-strength. Many key players are injured and some may be returning in the next few weeks or months.
