Yankees Game 89: Ibanez Goes Grand

Toronto Blue Jays 3 — New York Yankees 6

Raul Ibanez broke a tie with a no-doubt grand slam to give the Yankees a 6-3 win over the Toronto Blue Jays.

Phil Hughes had numerous starts in which he would be the victim of the home run so a start against the home run-hitting Toronto Blue Jays would normally appear to be a difficult outing for the Yankees right-hander. But Hughes went 7 innings and allowed just a solo home run. He would surrender just 2 runs on 4 hits as he had a very good outing for the Yankees tonight. David Robertson would have a scoreless 8th and Rafael Soriano would be called upon after a run was surrendered by Cody Eppley in the 9th inning.

The slumping Russell Martin got the Yankees offense with an opposite field Yankee Stadium home run that was likely assisted with the short porch in right field. On the other end, Robinson Cano continued his hot hitting with a run-scoring double to extend his hitting streak to a career-high 19 games. It would be just one of his two hits tonight but his second hit was a part of a tremendous moment in the game. In the 8th inning, with the game tied at 2, Cano’s single made him the second runner on base following Alex Rodriguez’s single. Mark Teixeira was hit by a pitch on the foot, a pitch that likely would have scored Alex Rodriguez had it not hit the Yankees first baseman. With 1 out, Nick Swisher would be called out on a breaking ball to slow down the Yankees rally. But Raul Ibanez patiently waited through his at-bat with the bases loaded and got a 3-1 count. With the advantage to the hitter, Ibanez made the most of it that he possibly could and took the fastball into right field for a grand slam to put the Yankees ahead for their 55th win of the season.
