Yankees Game 9: Victory comes in threes

CC Sabathia went 8 innings with 9 strikeouts and the benefit of a triple play.

Baltimore Orioles 2 — New York Yankees 5

A three-run error and a triple play take place in tonight’s 5-2 win over the Baltimore Orioles.

After two games postponed due to rain, the Yankees finally got to play a game and sent CC Sabathia to the mound. CC looked dominant in tonight’s game, giving up two runs, one earned, on eight hits with nine strikeouts. In the fourth and fifth inning, Sabathia would strike out five Orioles in a row. In the seventh inning, Sabathia was called on a balk, putting the runner in scoring position. He would get his ninth strikeout but would also give up the tying run. He would settle down and get the next two batters but the lead was lost.

Sabathia would come out for the eighth inning after receiving a lead. Two consecutive singles would appear to put the Yankees in a difficult spot but a rare feat would shift the momentum in a tremendous way. A ground ball that went to Robinson Cano would become an unusual, but effective, triple play. The official scoring would be 4-6-5-6-5-3-4.

The last triple play also featured CC Sabahia in the mound. It took place in April of the 2010 season and was an around-the-horn triple play started by Alex Rodriguez to Robinson Cano to Nick Johnson against the Oakland Athletics.

In the third inning, Kevin Youkilis would bring in the first Yankees run today as he continues swinging a hot bat, his second of three hits tonight. Playing some small ball in the fifth inning; Francisco Cervelli would walk and Brett Gardner would move him over with a sacrifice bunt. Robinson Cano would come through with a runner in scoring position with a single to left field.

With the game later tied in the seventh, two walks and a hit by pitch would load the bases for Vernon Wells with two outs. On a deep fly ball to center field, outfielder Adam Jones would drop what seemed like an easy catch, allowing all the baserunners to score on a three-run error that would be the difference.

With a three-run lead, and a triple play in the books, Mariano Rivera would get three outs in the ninth inning to end this adventurous game.

In injury news, Eduardo Nunez could not escape harm in the batter’s box for a second time this season. Nunez would be hit on the right wrist with a pitch and would stay in the game to run the bases. He would attempt to make a throw following the inning but could not make a throw that the team was comfortable with and would exit the game.
