Yankees game 90: Cano key in defeat of the Yankees

Seattle Mariners 4 – New York Yankees 3

The Yankees could not contain the former teammate in today’s game.

After yesterday’s strong win, the Yankees turned to Michael Pineda to keep the good times rolling. Unfortunately, Pineda struggled early in the game. In the first inning, Brad Miller hit a single but a ground out erased Miller in place of Kyle Seager. Former Yankee Robinson Cano took the former Mariner deep for a two-run home run.

The Yankees had an early two-run deficit working against them with Hisashi Iwakuma on the mound.

Through the first three innings, the Yankees were held to one hit with six ground outs as Iwakuma silenced the bats. After retiring the first two in the fourth inning, Mark Teixeira hit a single to right field. Brian McCann made the most of the two-out base hit with a huge two-run home run.

His 11th home run of the season tied the game at two.

After the first inning, Michael Pineda settled down, retiring 11 of 13. One of the two that reached prior to the first inning was Robinson Cano, who got to Pineda one more time.

In the sixth inning, Kyle Seager started off the inning with a single and Robinson Cano followed up with a deep two-run home run into the right field seats. The second home run off the bat of Cano for the day broke the 2-2 tie, putting the Yankees back in a two-run hole.

In six innings, Michael Pineda surrendered four runs on six hits with two walks and two strikeouts.

All of the runs came off the bat of Robinson Cano.

In the bottom half of the sixth inning, Jacoby Ellsbury led off with a sharp single through the right side of the infield. Brett Gardner followed by hitting a soft fly just over the head of the shortstop to put two on with no outs. Alex Rodriguez struggled throughout today’s game, and in this situation, he struck out for his third time of the day. Mark Teixeira grounded out and reliever Joe Beimel got Brian McCann to fly out, ending the inning that had a strong start to it.

The Yankees threatened in the seventh inning when Didi Gregorius hit a two-out double but could not bring him around to score. Chasen Shreve and Adam Warren combined for two scoreless innings in relief of Pineda and kept the Yankees within striking distance entering the ninth inning.

In the ninth inning, the Yankees went up against Mariners closer Carson Smith. Mark Teixeira led off the inning with a double to deep center field. Against Smith, Brian McCann struck out and Chase Headley struck out too. But Headley struck out on a pitch in the dirt and reached on the wild pitch to put runners on the corners with one out. Garrett Jones hit a soft ground out that scored a run to bring the Yankees within one. Didi Gregorius grounded out to second base to end the game, falling a run short of tying the game.
